Warm and delicious . like bread from the oven

Dr. Laurent is ready for a mid-life change in his medical career. He just left his job in Paris because he didn't feel close to the people, only `responsible for them.' So he takes up a practice from a retiring colleague as the only family doctor in the small rural town of St. Martin.

After a short time in his new practice, he discovers an important need he can fill. The villagers have a lot of myths and superstitions about childbirth: `Women are supposed to suffer.' `Women should not be afraid of a little pain.' `Only through suffering can you love your child.' Laurent wants to dispel these myths, and teach the village about natural childbirth and managing pain with natural methods.

Although Dr. Laurent means well, his crusade is resented and resisted by the villagers, by the Medical Board back in Paris, and by his expectant patients. The villagers cry `What's a Paris doctor doing here?' and `Some things should not be discussed.' The Medical Board accuses him of `unethically soliciting for business' and `seeking glory.' His patients complain `You're my doctor, not my priest' and `He makes me feel like a circus animal.'

Of course, we know that Dr. Laurent's cause is noble and just. Although their scenarios are totally different, I saw similarity between Dr. Laurent and Gary Cooper's character in High Noon . men fighting for just causes in strange towns against overwhelming opposition.

For me, this film was absorbing from start to finish.

I reviewed this movie as part of a project at the Library of Congress. I've named the project FIFTY: 50 Notable Films Forgotten Within 50 Years. As best I can determine, this film, like the other forty-nine I've identified, has not been on video, telecast, or distributed in the U.S. since its original release. In my opinion, it is worthy of being made available again.

The movie itself is the least interesting part!

Sure, I like those movies from the 50's showing teenagers and hot rods and soda shops with jukeboxes and kids dancing and all that. This movie has those things. Unfortunately the story itself is not as interesting as a lot of the peripheral stuff.

First, and this happens in a lot of these old movies, the 'teenager' hasn't seen his teen years in a lo-o-n-g time. The "kid" who plays the lead was already 26 or 27 when this movie came out. He may have crash-dieted his way down to teenager-skinny but there's no hiding that the face and voice just aren't in high-schooler territory. For that matter the other 'kid' - the antagonist - also seems to have left his teen years behind too.

I would like very much to get my hands on a hot-rod the likes of which the main character stole to race in, while allegedly taking it for a test drive. Something like $600 for a built up 50's hot rod? I'll take five. Put 'em on my VISA card, thanks.

The 'kid's' father seemed very hard to please. The kid wants to get a job and earn the money to buy his own car and that idea is met with complete rejection by ol' pops. How many people wish their kids were willing to work and earn the things they want to have? What I thought was the most blatantly funny part happens when the main character and his arch enemy 'the other kid' go up against each other at a drag strip. For one thing, the other kid is swerving all over the track at our 'hero', a move guaranteed to get you disqualified if not arrested at any drag strip anyplace. But the real laugh comes in with the fact that it takes these two speed demons in hot rods approximately 50 seconds to run the quarter mile. I could do that myself without a car! Even back then, a car could do a 1/4 mile in 16 or 17 seconds, and that hasn't been lightning fast for many years now. A 50 second quarter mile works out to about 18 miles per hour, an hilariously long time. You'd think they were driving to Cleveland, the race goes on so long.

Well it's an interesting period piece. Must have been lots of fun making these movies and making a living off them back in the 50's. However they aren't much to brag on. If you can see this one for free, go for it, but it you're thinking of buying it, do your best to buy it cheap.

Don't let the Marxist dogma keep you from viewing this film

As a showpiece of Czech Nationalism and Communist propaganda, "Jan Zizka" and the two other parts of the Hussite Trilogy, "Jan Hus" and "Proti Vsem" are easy to dismiss. The rights-holders have yet to release a subtitled version, but the Czech-language edition is available in DVD format in the Czech Republic. The Hussite Trilogy was a big-budget (for Czechoslovakia) historical drama which focused on the life and death of the priest/reformer Jan Hus and the movement known as the Hussite Revolution (ca. 1419-1437). Actor Zdenek Stepanek played both the intellectual preacher Jan Hus and the ingenious general Jan Zizka. Both of these historical characters inhabit a special place in the identity of the Czech Lands. Hus is revered for his dogged adherence to his convictions, but Zizka's legacy is somewhat more problematic because of the violent nature of the uprising he led. While the non-Czech speaker will be confused about the plot, the magic of these films is in the acting of Stepanek and in the production design. These films lavishly portray the early fifteenth century in details taken directly from artwork and chronicles of the time. Those viewers familiar with modern Prague will find their favorite landmarks only partly finished--the towers of the Tyn Church are still under construction, the Charles Bridge only has one statue, and the Old City hall lacks the Horlogue. These kind of details speak to the meticulous research that went into these films. The costumes are reminiscent of the best designs from American period films produced in the 1930's and 40's, but display a greater variety of looks. The viewer would be hard pressed to find a plain white or stone interior wall anywhere in the films. The painting on the interiors was taken from the backgrounds of illuminated manuscripts and every wall is a riot of color, geometric patterns, and even inflammatory depictions of the Pope. Medievalists and enthusiasts will value these films for the battle scenes. Jan Zizka and his Hussite followers were the first warriors to consistently defeat knights in armor with guns and farm implements. The film "Jan Zizka" very carefully portrays the strategies that made this happen. This complex piece of history, rarely discussed outside of the Czech Republic, shows the wane of the mounted knights and the rise of gunpowder as a practical weapon. The film does suffer from enforced Marxist dogma, much like Sergei Eisenstein's epic "Alexander Nevsky." Yet the story is much more complex than "Nevsky," and takes far fewer liberties with acknowledged historical facts. Additionally, "Jan Zizka" embraces fifteenth century aesthetics, and the film's art direction successfully re-creates the designs left behind by Zizka's contemporaries. This aspect alone makes the Hussite Trilogy fascinating viewing. If and when a subtitled version is ever released, these films deserve to be placed among the best Medieval-themed films.

A little nonsense now and then, is cherished by the wisest men.

This is one of Cantinflas' movies with the most heart. Cantinflas' exchange with children reveals as much about his comic genius as it does his underlying humanitarian attributes. It is easy to see with this movie why Cantinflas is considered the quintessential Mexican "tramp"... because in all he does, with all his faults, and despite the joking around, he still has a conscious. This movie will make you bust a gut (like my father usually does when he sees it), as well as leave you all warm and fuzzy inside. If you like this movie as much as I do, you will also enjoy El Bombero Atomico.

Vibrance, Colour and absurdly beautiful music

This is a film that features the music of Dmitri Shoshtakovich http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKlS2Ez2UqY for example is his famous Waltz number two. This film is a masterpiece for this fact alone. It may be a cloudy reflection of post war Soviet, with trimmings of ideology but who better than the Nationalist Dmitri Shoshtakovich to set the music. For those who do not know, Dmitri Shoshtakovich is amongst the greatest composers to have lived. The movie is particularly sweet at times with trimmings of innocence, there is a vitality and energy that is timeless. The cinematography is always beautiful with wonderful vistas and excellent colour. So, this is truly a period piece, this in fact is indeed a work of art.

Lush desert adventure, with a nice 50's feel.

This desert epic was filmed in 1956, but wasn't released until two years later. The producers obviously put some money into this, as evinced by some of the epic-style footage, exotic locales, large numbers of extras and horses, costumes, etc. However, the film on a whole fails to hit the mark, showing to disadvantage in black-and-white, even though it was filmed originally in color. Like most drive-in prints, the film is only available in black-and-white, and Italy is no help in unearthing a color version. Riccardo Montalban plays well, but the beautiful Carmen Sevilla steals the program, as she secretly woos Montalban under the nose of her tyrannical father (played by Gino Cervi). Cervi acted suitably in low-budget, as well as high budget, adventure tales, but seemed to avoid the former, this one being an exception. As for the music, Sevilla sings a song entitled 'Destiny,' but the rest of the score is a tawdry re-hash which becomes repetitive after awhile. Fernando Cerchio was responsible for putting the finishing touches on this film, and perhaps for doing most of the directing as well. Overall it is a decent film, which enjoys an occasional second or third viewing.

Excuse my Français, mesdames, messieurs...

If you're fond of 1950's US cars, women's clothes and hairdo's, mid century modern interiors and nice houses, don't miss this movie. Furthermore, the dialogs are quite funny, with a hint of Oscar Wilde here and there.... (Aaah, I'm a victim of my reputation. No,it's your reputation that makes victims....) Unfortunately enough, most of the jokes only work in French, and you'll need to master the subtleties of the French language to understand the comic angle: so keep in mind that 80 % of the power of the dialogs will be lost, when you're watching a translated or dubbed version.

I'm quite surprised that some of the commentators seem to have missed the point, that Action Immediate clearly aims at being a parody of spy/gangster movies, but even more of the French intellectual lover-boy. The first remark is the reason why the bad guys have to look as cheap imitations of tougher gangsters or spies. The second remark is why special agent Francis Coplan is quite different in this movie than he is in the books of Paul Kenny. Sure.... Henri Vidal clearly is no Jean Marais (Fantomas) nor an Alain Delon (Les Félins, Scorpio...) or one of their US counterparts. He has no square jawbone, piercing eyes, no highly muscular feline body... He's neither a smooth operator à la Cary Grant, when it comes to approach the ladies. His exuberant clumsiness rather reminds me of Jean-Paul Belmondo in the 1970's, not exactly France's most handsome actor either, but still popular with the ladies.

Could it be, than, that the underlying message this movie is sending out is that, well, some women rather fall for "cute" clumsiness in the Droopy-style, and appreciate some wisecracking communication much more than the ice-cold semi-god like types as often portrayed by Alain Delon or Clint Eastwood ? Aha ! Think that one over ! The makers of this movie clearly wanted to appeal to a larger crowd than the Francis Coplan fans. And frankly, the Paul Kenny character known to the readers of the Fleuve Noir-detective novels –editor of the Coplan books- would probably have been far too brutal for the average 1957 French or Belgian moviegoers. In the books there was more room for violence and 'sex', less for the wisecracks.

This deliberate choice for more innocence certainly will have disappointed a lot of Coplan-fans... But well, the quite funny dialogs surely pleased lots of others... And still appeal to me...But then again, I never quite liked the modern answer to these so-called old fashioned movies ... Dialogs with as much as possible "prohibited words" just for the fun to shock never quite appealed to me... Try "Doublecrossed" (1991) with Dennis Hopper as a mild introduction if you don't know what I mean...

Strike a light, Vesta!

I've never understood the appeal of the male impersonator: the actress who pretends to be a boy or a man. The only context in which this makes sense to me is the British panto, in which the 'principal boy' is played by an actress whose male costume of tight-fitting breeches actually emphasises (rather than conceals) her very female attributes. I also understand that certain 'trouser roles' in classical opera are easier for the female voice to perform than the male. But, as for the actresses who make a speciality of genuinely trying to pass as male ... what's the point?

Yet for some reason, from the late Victorian era up until the 1930s, male impersonators were hugely popular in Britain. Ronnie Barker's cheeky anthology 'Sauce' reprints a piece of Victorian doggerel about two brothers who did an act in the variety halls: realising that sister acts were more popular than brother acts, they billed themselves as women but appeared onstage in masculine dress ... and became far more successful as 'male impersonators' than they would have been as male performers.

One of the most popular and successful male impersonators was Vesta Tilley (1864-1952). She had a repertoire of male characters, most notably Burlington Bertie (a homeless man who sleeps in the Burlington Arcade but boasts about his social contacts). Dressed as a sailor, she performed 'Jolly Good Luck to the Girl Who Loves a Sailor'. As a roguish womaniser, she sang 'I'm Following in Father's Footsteps, I'm Following Me Dear Old Dad'. Her sentimental ballad was 'Sweetheart May'. As Tilley sang all of her songs in the contralto-soprano range, one wonders why she bothered with the male disguises.

'After the Ball' (named for another of her song hits) is ostensibly Tilley's life story, filmed on a painfully low budget. All the usual showbiz clichés are here. The most interesting scenes are Tilley's interactions with various British and American theatrical figures. In New York City, she works for impresarios Tony Pastor and Oscar Hammerstein: the latter is not the lyricist, but his namesake grandfather. Sadly, this film doesn't even make a token attempt to depict these men accurately. Pastor was massively fat, and Hammerstein (the original) had an elaborate beard: you'd never know it from the actors on offer here.

I was intrigued to see George M Cohan's name in the cast list of this movie. Apparently, Tilley actually performed in a stage comedy with Cohan at least once. Here, Cohan is played brashly by obscure actor Mark Baker. It's disappointing that Cohan (or, rather, Baker as Cohan) never once cuts loose with some 'Yankee Doodle Dandy' song-and-dancing here. More regrettable is the fact that Baker hasn't got even a fraction of the dynamic presence of Cohan himself, nor of James Cagney nor Joel Grey: two performers who have played Cohan far more memorably than Baker does here.

The romantic male lead is essayed by Laurence Harvey, as the titled Englishman who becomes Vesta's match. Whenever you see the words 'romantic lead' and 'Laurence Harvey' in the same sentence, you know something's wrong. Harvey is so cold and unemotional here, he seems to be practising for his role as the brainwashed zombie in 'The Manchurian Candidate'.

In the central role as Vesta Tilley, Pat Kirkwood is attractive and personable but utterly fails to convince me that she was one of the leading stage performers of the early twentieth century. Kirkwood's forays into male garb are embarrassing; she seems to be eager to convince us that she really *isn't* a man. More intriguing, in her brief appearance, is child actress Margaret Sawyer playing Tilley as a child. I have a deep passion for the history of the British entertainment industry during precisely the time period depicted in this movie, yet 'After the Ball' largely fails to capture the spark and excitement of that era. The very poor art direction doesn't help. I'll generously rate this movie 6 out of 10.

This should pass some time quite well

Let's break this film into 3 scenes: the intro and robbery – good. The ending – good. The wordy bit in the middle – awful.

There is a reasonable (not brilliant) story in there and the cast make a good fist of that but the overly emotional scenes which bind the story together just don't work. That the score is overpowering doesn't help.

But this film could have been so much better if it was tightened up. There are some decent jazz rhythms humming away in the background which could have been worked on and the dramatisation I refer to in the middle could also have been better arranged.

On the plus side, the seedy setting suits the film and I appreciate the straightforward action – no need for choreographed martial arts when a few decent punches (carefully played in the background) do the job.

I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this film again but...if you have 90 minutes to kill it is worth persevering with.

HELP!!

Yes, I have seen this movie, but not for, probably, 35 years or more! Where I grew up, in southern California, in the days before cable or video, there were many old movies that were played on regular broadcast channels. "The Crooked Circle" was one of them, a low-budget film about a boxer pressured into taking "dives." I watched this several times; if there's anybody out there who remembers this movie, PLEASE either email me, or comment on this website about it. I'd LOVE to see this film again!!

Just okay movie cut from the old Gangbusters TV show would have been better as individual episodes

Apparently re-cut episodes from the Gangbusters TV show on the big screen. While this was frequently done in the 50's and 60's because people didn't have a TV or a color TV and producers wanted an increased return on their investment (big screen ticket sales or if it went to the small screen resale of a series that isn't in syndication), the results were usually less then the sum of their parts. The only time I've ever seen it work were where multi-part stories were put together (Ala Rocky Jones or Man From Uncle) or in the case of horror anthology (The Veil and 13 Demon Street). Here the effect is to have stories of American criminals in the 20's and 30's (Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Bonnie and Clyde, etc)inter-cut with each other as a narrator talks about how the FBI hunted them down. Its a weird concoction that doesn't quite work because its clear that there are things here that don't belong together. More than once I looked at the TV oddly because things didn't seem right. In fairness I won't describe the cheapness of the production since this was what early TV (and the series) was like. Its not bad, but its not very good either. To be perfectly honest the episodes of the series that I've seen work better a single episodes where we're not expecting as much. Given the choice I'd rent dvds of the show instead of this movie.

A hero for our times

Alberto a slick young man is talking with a few friends one evening and when he mentions a bomb explosion. His conversation is overheard by a police detective that happens to be passing by. Italy was going through a rough period at the time with a lot of unrest dominating everything. Immediately, Alberto becomes a marked man that will have to think twice before he speaks because with his big mouth, any wrong move will land him in jail. The strange incident will make him a suspect later on because of the precedent he set innocently, but that will be a strike against him forever.

To make matters worse, he is an Italian man still living with a couple of doting aunts that tolerate his peculiar behavior. His job is in what appears to be some sort of factory, but he works as an assistant to a woman executive in the main office. The president of the firm believes in monitoring his employees' every move. Not only that, he can spy into their conversations. This man is clearly terrorizes his employees by intimidation. Nothing can be said that he doesn't know already.

The film follows the adventures of Alberto in the office, as well as at home. Mario Monicelli also contributed to the screen treatment. Mr. Monicelli, with a long career in the Italian cinema, shows why he is one of the best in the business. Although this is in no way anything in comparison with his masterpiece, "I soliti ignoti", or "Big Deal on Madonna Street", as it was known in America, he is never boring.

Working with an excellent actor, Alberto Sordi, he makes this comedy better than it would have been under another's director helm. Mr. Sordi, a great comedian is at his best in the film. He plays tribute to another master of the Italian cinema, Alberto Lattuada, who is seen as the director of the company that employs Mr. Sordi. Also on hand, a young Bud Spencer, who will later go to fame in some memorable "spaghetti westerns", and Leopoldo Trieste, a good comedian.

This is a film seldom seen today and it's worth a look by any serious fans of Mr. Monicelli's and Mr. Sordi's.
