Another Childhood Productions Classic!
One of the most fascinating of the German fairy tales imported to the US by Childhood Productions in the mid 60s, this one is utterly charming, engaging, weird, coherent, and boasts some winning mini-songs by prolific 60s song team Anne & Milton DeLugg. In fact, this score is familiar to me, as I had the now-rare soundtrack album put out by RCA Camden which, in addition to the bouncy songs, included virtually the whole soundtrack, dialogue, Paul Tripp and all! The evil dwarf is very strange, somewhat diabolical, and extremely nasty. On the other hand, Snow White and Rose Red are unusually fetching for fairy tale chix. The bear is mangy but cute, and Prince Nitwit provides the inevitable comic relief. The film is especially attractive, including a wonderful house where the sisters live. With THE BIG BAD WOLF, this musta been a hell of a double bill for shell-shocked 60s weeners. And Kid Rhino's video release of this is a fantastic way to bring back the fairy-tale 60s!
