Cool but not enough Mamie!

For 1955, well-made exploitation teen car-thief ring story with William Campbell (decent actor) as the lead and Keenan Wynn (wonderful actor) as an adult type throw this flick into second-gear immediately with a great dance scene, BUT..I only wish Mamie Van Doren had a bigger part. She was still a supporting B-actress in '55, but she's gold with a great blonde ponytail and some flashy jitterbug/rock dancing. Young John Saxon in small part is authentically youthful and naive.

A 5 out of 10. Best performance = Mamie Van Doren. Terse, almost powerful, yet topical. What can you say? Check it out and don't hold your nose in the air to films like this (which always made money and got no respect).

All About Eve made palatable

This film was made in the shadow of ALL ABOUT EVE, and paints a more benign view of that film's central situation. Ginger Rogers plays a leading Broadway star, who retains a close relationship with her former husband (Paul Douglas), and works closely with playwright William Holden (possibly a softer build-up for his play director in Bing Crosby's/Grace Kelly's THE COUNTRY GIRL). Pat Crowley, a younger woman of some acting talent, is trying to break into the circles that cast and produce Broadway plays (she is doing mostly off-Broadway work). The relationship of these four characters are the basis of this comedy.

There are differences between the situation here and the situation in EVE. There was more of an atmosphere of the theater and it's traditions in EVE (because Joseph Mankiewicz writes literate scripts, and was determined to show what goes on behind the stage curtains). But there Bette Davis has gotten trapped into a lonely greatness on stage, and she turns out to be willing to vacate her pedestal if she can have a human life with Gary Merrill. She just does not like the way Anne Baxter is trying to replace her in her parts - Baxter's underhanded methods are despicable. Crowley is not Baxter. She genuinely admires Rogers, and just wants entry (which she may get through Holden). It is just that Rogers is still clinging to her youth - Holden is her last chance for such a cling when they go out together. But even Rogers realizes that she is beyond the point of return. In fact, towards the end of the film the audience and Holden and Crowley discover that Rogers actually gives herself a long summer vacation where she can wear softer, easier clothing and eat as much as she wants to. In the end she accepts that the scepter is passed, but she still has her old husband/friend/and continuous argument partner Douglass to play with.

Whatever became of Kelly Ryan ?

I was 11 when I saw this B-western and I do not remember anything about it except that I fell deeply and as passionately as an 11 year old can for the eponymous heroine as played by Kelly Ryan.Miss Ryans place in the chronology of such things was that she replaced Francoise Arnoul ("French Can Can")in my affections and shortly after was replaced by Debbie Reynolds. I never heard of Miss Ryan again. But it says much about the impression she made on me that 50 years later her name came readily to mind.

Rogelio A.Gonzalez who had collaborated with Ismael Rodriguez in some Infante's films may does not have his popular sense, but he had a good rhythm and very good understating with Infante, relate the calamities of a provincial guy who try to get ahead in an honest way,however he found a job by influences, later and married with the naive Marga Lopez he lost his job and start his Calvary, different of the neighborhood atmosphere that Ismael Rodriguez put Infante in Nosotros Los Pobres , the poverty seems the main topic of the film and has some similitude with Rodriguez Film,only Silvia Pinal as the frivolous daughter of the good Andes Soler seems to be rebel of this condition and try to get a better life even against of one of the most value thing that one as a poor has, her morality and propose to her father obtain some benefits of Luis Aceves ,a Kind of gangster , and boss of her father in exchange for her sexual favors. Infante go to the jail,but Gonzalez don't show any scene of this and like Pepe el Toro he lost a son but no so tragically and consequence of this Gonzalez get some good intense scenes with Infante and Lopez that make at the end the film leaves a good taste

Interesting adventure tale, hampered by poor production values.

Cochran and Stevens are brothers, pursued by the law through the dangerous Everglades, during the Civil War. The accent is on action as the duo encounter swamps, alligators, Seminole Indians and a captured white woman (Matthews). While the storyline is interesting, the obvious low budget and use of stock footage are distracting. An interesting artifact, considering the cast.

Nice surprise

Det Andy Doyle (Bill Elliott) suspects that a suicide is actually a murder. He suspects the victim's son, Wallace (Tom Drake) who is blind and he pursues him until he gets to the truth..

This is a good detective mystery that is well-acted by all. A special mention must go to Minerva Urecal who plays the nosy landlady and neighbour "Mrs Kelly" and Beverley Garland who plays Drake's girlfriend "Phyllis". Andy Doyle has a similar style to Columbo in that he keeps coming back to pester people. It's quite amusing although I'm not sure that this was intended. He's a right pain in the arse. But a pleasant one! He's very straight-talking but meets his match with several other straight-talkers in the cast, notably Mrs Kelly on their first meeting. She's quite funny.

The storyline will keep you guessing as to what really occurred and it moves along at a nice pace. This was a surprisingly good discovery and I will be looking out for more of these Bill Elliott detective stories.

They live by day.

"Run for cover" occupies a curious place in Nicholas Ray's brilliant filmography.Sandwiched between "Johnny Guitar" and "Rebel without a cause,it suffered accordingly.They say Ray himself disliked it.And however,in "Run for cover" he opened up as he never did before.

In "knock on any door" ,Ray had already displayed a "father" -"son" relationship between Bogart and John Derek (who takes on here roughly the same kind of part he played at the beginning of the fifties).Ray would reach his peak with the following work ("Rebel" ) where Plato wanted Jim to be his dad and began to think of a new family with his pal and Judy.

Davey is a tragic character .He seems to be born under a bad sign ,he is known to have a very bad reputation wherever he goes.It's obvious in the scene of the train:whereas Matt (Cagney) wants to give the money back to the town,Davey is thinking of the life he could lead if this loot were his.

Matt knows that Davey needs someone to become a man .Alone he would walk on crutches .His leg is a transparent metaphor.Maybe he thinks of a new family he would rebuild with Helga (Viceca Lindfords).The relationship between the mature man and the Swede is full of tenderness and human warmth,a permanent feature in Ray's canon (see the lovers of "they live by night" and the teenagers in " Rebel without a cause".Like Jeff in "lusty man",Matt had a raw deal and he wants to make the best of the years which he's still got to live.Jeff will help Wes become a man in the cruel world of rodeo,but it's a different matter with Davey Bishop (what a surname!).

It's remarkable that violence appears twice after scenes depicting children: the first time when Matt is making a wooden gun for a boy ;the second time in the church as a choir of little boys and girls is singing a canticle to praise the Lord.

"Rebel without a cause" is probably Ray's most underrated work.Davey remains his most moving character ;without any mawkishness ,the director paints the picture of the rebel with a cause,who cannot understand why he should work for eight dollars a week when there's plenty of money to take.

The last line is my favorite in any Ray movie.In its own special way,it preserves the viewer from despair.

Lenny the Actor

As a devoted fan of Lenny Bruce, I've wanted to see this film for years and if, like me, you're prepared to experience a level of filmmaking that makes Ed Wood look like Orson Wells, you will not be disappointed.

This jaw dropping bit of cinematic excrement features Lenny's stripper wife, Honey Bruce (whose over-the-top make up suggests that she was preparing to audition for Susan Cabot's role in "The Wasp Woman") as a B-Girl and Lenny as the tough guy enforcer for the gangster bar owner. Watch for the scene where Lenny "kills" a guy who pulls Honey's hair by delivering the lamest looking judo chop in cinema history. Watch Lenny hitch up his collar and snap his fingers like a juvenile delinquent in a Jerry Lewis movie.

Timothy Farrel recreates his role as Umberto Scalli from the infamous "Pin-Down Girls" (aka "Racket Girls") and the scene where he and Bruce (who gets the blame/credit for the screenplay, as well) "rough up" a B-girl who's stealing from them will split your sides.

Among the great psychotronic films of all time. Every bit as bad/good as "Robot Monster".

Alex Nicol shields his brother from murder charge and finds an art forgery conspiracy

"The Gilded Cage" is a compact crime noir, starring Alex Nicol, and he sparks the picture with a lively performance. His physical presence and strong voice are both assets to the film. In the beginning of the film, Ursula Howells livens up the proceedings as a sophisticated actress.

The picture is a murder mystery for a good part of its length. Actress Howells has been shot and Nicol's brother would be implicated if he did not intervene, which he does. Gradually the role of a valuable painting (The Gilded Cage) comes to the fore, but the skein is tangled.

Clifford Evans is a recognizable presence providing support, sporting a mustache in this movie.

This is an easy to take Brit noir, by which I mean that it moves straight ahead, doesn't shilly-shally on bit parts, avoids heavy accents, and avoids awkwardness.

A "Lost in Translation" for 50's Japan

Mr. Mito (Shuji Sano), a Tokyo businessman, is demoted and sent to Osaka. There, he finds lodging in the titular inn, and makes the acquaintance of many of the town's citizens. Notable among them are the maids at the inn, a hard-drinking geisha, and a mysterious woman Mito encounters at the mailbox. In Japan, director Gosho's name is synonymous with melancholy and finding laughter through tears; An Inn at Osaka bears up that reputation. The struggle to stay afloat in life, especially financially, is a running theme of the film, as all of the characters struggle with looming poverty and gnawing loneliness, but it all ends with a kind of quiet triumph.

A Perfect Movie Made With Love by Entertainment Pros

"They don't make movies like this anymore" is the usual phrase heard about classic movies. More appropriately "They CAN'T make a movie like this anymore" applies to "The Quiet Man".

John Ford directed John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara in a number of classic unforgettable Westerns with a familiar supporting cast including Ward Bond, Victor McLaughlin, Mildred Natwick and other pros. "The Quiet Man" moves these familiar icons from the post Civil War American West to the post World War II rural Ireland.

You don't have to be Irish to appreciate the visual beauty of the Irish countryside and villages or the beauty of Maureen O'Hara, but your appreciation of the story is enhanced if you know something about the unique Irish culture.

Ireland and America have been tightly bonded from the earliest Colonial Days of America and are permanently intertwined since the Potato Famine of the 1840's sent tens of millions of immigrants to populate the vast U.S.

John Ford perfectly casts John Wayne as the Irish born, U.S. raised troubled ex-boxer returning to his birthplace and Maureen O'Hara as the Irish beauty . The rest of the lovingly assembled cast contains mostly familiar faces in supporting roles.

The script covers vast ground in a mostly light-hearted manner. The story plays like most John Ford/John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara movies as one step larger than life.

It's clear that everyone appearing in this movie LOVES being in the movie. Maureen O'Hara never looked more beautiful and thrives as the woman in the middle between two warring men, her brother (Victor McLauglin) and her suitor (John Wayne).

The over-the-top village to village brawl between John Wayne and Victor McLaughlin is hilarious and ultimately warm hearted. It sums up the strange Irish notion that you have to physically pummel a man before you can have his friendship and respect.

There are big scenes and little scenes, but every scene is a delight.

This is a movie that can't and won't ever be made again. It's a movie that everyone should enjoy.

I personally feel about Parineeta which was originally made by Bimal Roy to be the true classic.Its rather ironical to see that modern India has woken up and applauded the 2005 version of Parineeta made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.But the actual classic is much more realistic and brings the true romance of the "Fiance" and Bimal Da has brought the characters right out of the novel and closest to the human relations.

However if one compares the roles of Sekhar in both the films,i feel Ashok Kumar has portrayed this character with such a elan and a rebel at times,though Saif Ali Khan looked very kiddish and an amateur in this role.

As of Lolita,I cant think of anyone else but Meena Kumari justifying this role with compassion and ethos.

I would recommend to see Bimal Da's version first and then go for the 2005 version of the same film.

An entertaining Italian screwball comedy.

One of the last century's great life forces Sophia Loren is on fine display in this entertaining piece of screwball Italiano as she teams up with Marcello Mastroianni for the first of fifteen pairings. Loren is Lina Stroppiani who along with her father (Vittorio De Sica) are professional thieves. With two male accomplices Lina attempts to steal Paolo's (Mastroianni) taxi but instead of taking her to the police he grudgingly and through much frustration falls for her.

Too Bad's thin and inane plot is brusquely carried along by the energetic, suave and sexy style of its cast. Loren's face, breasts and hips seduce the camera and dominate the scenery as she understandably flusters the comic Marcello. Loren's presence negates anyone stealing the film from her but De Sica as her father shrewdly manipulates with a suave charm, especially in one of the film's final scenes where he all but takes over a police station.

Over a half a century later Too Bad She's Bad retains its comic energy and entertainment value much in part to the ideal melding of opera and screwball and the earthy blinding presence of the stunning Ms. Loren strolling the sidewalks of Rome.

memorable

at first sigh, a kind of Macbeth. in fact, only a work of Ioan Slavici adaptation , a remarkable cast and an extraordinary director. a memorable film about metamorphose of a good poor man. ambition, love, hate, desire of money and power. and Constantin Codrescu as best option for Giță role. after years, it remains one of great Romanian movies of all times. construction of atmosphere, the use of light, the realism of characters choices and actions, Geo Barton as impressive Lică Sămădău and the nuances of performance of Ioana Bulcă. images as ash pictures and the beauty of music. and, something more. a testimony about a period art and a testimony about nuanced adaptation.

Great cast, good photography, but hard to believe story

Another commenter mentioned the un-likelihood of a whaler captain taking his bride on a projected three-year voyage.

In fact, sailors, a generally superstitious lot, often found women on a ship to be a jinx.

Then, too, today the very act of whaling is so P non-C that a lot of people will object to that aspect, rather than concentrating on the fact the story is set at a time no one saw a particular problem with killing the sea-going mammals for their oil.

Robert Taylor gives one of his best performances; Stewart Granger comes across very well.

Ann Blyth has some good scenes, and some bad ones, but she does them all well.

One really attractive aspect of "All the Brothers" is a superb supporting cast. Peter Whitney, for example, has one of his best roles in a very long career. He too often plays a dumb or bumbling character, but here he is a strong person in a pivotal position.

Leo Gordon has a smaller role, but he stands out, as does John Lupton, in a larger part.

Frank DeKova (whom I met on the set of "Johnny Firecloud") was a superb character actor but who was too often relegated to small roles. He could have been a bigger star, with his talent, but he was recognized by his peers, anyway.

The great Glenn Strange and the great John Doucette were aboard, adding their enormous talents and, as so often true in Hollywood, not getting screen credit.

Come to think of it, this movie is worth watching just for the great cast. But be prepared to suspend your disbelief, and don't look at the blue eyes of the "native girl."
