A good movie

This is a fun Robert Mitchum movie, with a little taste of the "Magnificent Seven". Mitchum plays an American adventurer who runs afoul of American gunrunner Zacary Scott. While attempting to steal the shipment of guns from Scott he becomes involved with Scotts wife as well as the noble cause of the revolution. He ultimately sees that the rebels get the guns. This movie is very enjoyable, with the always good performance of Gilbert Roland (as the rebel general) and several other recognizible Hispanic actors such as Rudy Hoyos. I haven't seen this movie shown on TV even on cable for years. I would definitely like to see it released on VHS. The movie has some pretty good action scenes so if you get a chance to see it, DO!

The Struggle Inside The UAW

A couple of Irish film stars, Pat O'Brien and Dennis O'Keefe star in Inside Detroit, a city not known for being the location of too many films. The Robocop films and the Mark Wahlberg film Four Brothers are the only other ones that come to mind.

Detroit may be still the most heavily unionized city in the continental United States due to the automobile industry. In fact the line between the United Auto Workers and the Democratic Party of Michigan is all, but erased. At the time that Inside Detroit was filmed, over half of the workers in the USA were unionized as opposed to less than 25% today. It was a different world.

Racketeers moving in on unions is an old story. In New York City it was the garment industry, in Detroit its automobiles.

When a bomb goes off in a union hall killing Dennis O'Keefe's brother, he springs into action. He knows the man responsible is Pat O'Brien and the rest of the film is dealing with how to bring him down.

For one of the few times in his career O'Brien is a bad guy. A seemingly respectable married man, wife and two kids, Katharine Warren and Mark Damon and Margaret Field, he's also got one hush/hush mistress on the side in vice madam Tina Carver.

Without saying what happens, it's on the family front that O'Keefe works to bring O'Brien down.

The film is competently made with some nice shots of Detroit in the prosperous Fifties. O'Keefe's character as hero is good, but fairly one dimensional.

My guess is that if you're willing to accept Pat O'Brien as an adulterous villain, you will like Inside Detroit.

OK film but the plot is average and misses out on the chance to develop interesting characters and emotions within the main thriller plot

While Lee and Sue Cochrane are out at work, their nanny is out in the park with their baby, Simon. Leaving his pram outside a shop when she pops in to buy some supplies, the nanny is horrified to leave the shop and find the pram missing. The police are immediately alerted and Detective Inspector Craig is put on the case – picking up what few leads there are and willing to consider even the thinnest of clues. Meanwhile Lee and Sue cannot contain themselves and set out to try and find Simon themselves, also following any sliver of information that comes from any source.

At the time this subject a child stolen away in a public place) must have seemed like the worst nightmare but also unrealistic enough to provide some security. Nowadays the subject is all too common and very publicly reported – this makes the film a lot more relevant but also a lot less realistic since we know that this is not how these investigations go and, sadly, a lot of the most public cases end up with the child being found dead and abused rather than saved. This film opens with an oh-so-dated society of nannies with prams, green parks and married couples in single beds (where did Simon come from? Or was it just that once?) but launches straight into the tension with Simon being taken. The general air of tension is kept up but the plot doesn't do enough to help it by mixing it up with a light air and having a few too many red herrings without providing a satisfying narrative drive.

Maybe I'm being picky but the calm air of the police and public was a bit unconvincing and it made it harder to believe that they would calmly pick through bins looking for clues as their first course of action. Of course I know this is what they would do in the situation (or crawl across the area on hands and knees) but the air of calm was a real turn off. The hysteria of the parents is fine but the Nancy Drew investigation they go off on is silly and wastes the chance to really get to grips with the myriad of emotions that parents must feel in this situation. I would have preferred the film to have the police get into a tense race against time while the parents struggled with helplessness, guilt, anger, pain and turning on one another – that would have been more interesting that having them really involved in the case, the parents on the news over the past few years seem far too shell-shocked to do anything like running round the woods!

The cast are average, mostly being far too wooden and unemotional. Farrar is a strong chinned lead but no more than that at any time; he and Knight have a bit of a p*ssing contest to see who can puff their chest out the furthest and be the most 'manly', but it only makes for unconvincing roles for the audience. Arnall is OK considering it was her first screen role, and she draws the emotion out well – if only she had been given more time to does this as a focus and not an aside. In the support cast is a surprisingly amount of famous British faces looking all a bit young – an unmistakable Barbara Winsor, Joan Sims and Thora Hird are the main ones but quite a few bit players are wheeled out to provide red herrings – in fact I wonder if the fact that they were well-known could have been deliberate to make the audience think they were bigger parts of the mystery?

Overall this is an OK thriller but the stiff upper lip and rather calm approach takes away from the tension it should have had. The story is a bit weak and unconvincing and doesn't really deliver the goods in terms of the overall narrative and the development of characters and emotions but it does the job well enough for a rather dated piece of entertainment. Worth seeing if it's a dull Saturday afternoon.

Musical vehicle for the long lived Lola Flores

Quite ambitiously staged vehicle for Signora Flores, who has a strong singing voice and gets by doing her castanets number. Her career ran half a century. Picture a singing Anna Magnani Her numbers space the plot that has her leaving the gypsy camp for the big city, where her talent gets to be show cased in a (cut to colour) TV studio ballet to Ravel's Bolero.

The production is quite substantial in the terms of the contemporary Mexican film. Competent all studio filming in the hands of Cardona, whose exploitation films had wide circulation dubbed, while the works of Miss Flores appear to be known only in the Hispanic world.

An excellent, well-cast and well-acted western.

Both Tab Hunter and Skip Homeier put in excellent performances in this film. Both are well-cast for the roles they play - Tab, the "good guy" and Skip, the "bad, ruthless killer." The final fight scene between Tab Hunter and Skip Homeier is one of the best I have seen staged in a western. The final outcome was in no way predictable. The movie stands up well after 40 years.

Not the good kind of bad.

I just saw this at the Boston Sci-Fi Film Festival 31. I have a few observations to offer.

This movie certainly falls within the realm of "there go eighty minutes of my life that I'll never get back again". In fact I have two quite earnest theories about this movie that may account for at least a part of its overall horribility.

It is quite obvious that the film was only minimally scripted. There were all the hallmarks of improvised dialog, but not in an artsy experimental cinema kind of way. More like "OK, We've got this sound stage for an hour, but no dialog written. Action!" My other suspicion is that the studio contracted for a film of a specific length, and the director was actively trying to pad it out. This is quite obvious. Another commenter mentioned product placements for Longines watches, but not every time we were subjected to real-time half-minute closeups of clocks were we looking at a Longines.

Finally, If I ever hear Borodin's "Stranger in Paradise" again, I'll strangle myself! It was played at least twelve times, I'd swear.

I've officially named the villain "Mr. Tiki-Head" for reasons that will be obvious if you have the misfortune to view this dreadful excuse for a movie.

"...for the night is already at hand and it is best to yield to the night"

Found guilty of murder and sentenced to death, a young woman lives out her last days under the watchful eyes of a small group of prison wardens.

From its edgy opening sequence as the camera furtively tracks Dors' determined and resolute steps towards the killing, to the devastating final image of a smouldering cigarette we suspect will still be burning after the executioner has pulled his leaver, Yield To The Night is an extraordinary exploration of the reasons and repercussions surrounding a premeditated murder in mid-fifties Britain. At its heart is a performance which, over 50 years later still resonates with depth and naturalism. Even as we have witnessed her coldly and repeatedly shoot another woman to death, under the expert direction of J. Lee Thompson, Dors enables us to feel sorrow for the killer Mary Hilton and even if we can't condone the deliberate taking of her victim's life, we can at least realise that Hilton is also somehow a victim of circumstance. Dors doesn't put a foot wrong from beginning to end and the fact that she didn't receive domestic and international award nominations for her performance is in my opinion as puzzling as it is unforgivable, especially when one considers what were the celebrated performances of the time (Virginia McKenna, Audrey Hepburn and Dorothy Alison were BAFTA nominated that year). Could it be that the British and subsequently Amercian studio systems were unwilling to accept Dors as the intelligent and talented actress she so obviously was? Certainly the marketing and promotion of Yield To The Night in the US supports this premise - retitled Blonde Sinner, with lurid posters ridiculously emphasising Dors' sex symbol qualities and carrying the ludicrous and tacky tag-line "The Man-By-Man Story of a Lost Soul".

Flaws? Yes - as written, Jim Lancaster, whilst handsome and initially charming just doesn't allow the viewer to believe he could be the reason for Mary's actions. Undoubtedly less to do with Michael Craig's performance than with the character being undeveloped in general. However, overall Yield To The Night is a powerful film that will linger long after the final credits have rolled, and now it is finally available in DVD should become essential viewing for all British cinema fans.

Not scary... funny!

This creepy Mansion comedies are a dime a dozen. Everybody has one in their credits. Tin Tan, Pompín Iglesias, etc. Here the star is Clavillazo. The plot changes though, because the group of people who were called to get the inheritance, will not have to spend 3 days and 3 nights in the creepy Mansion before they die or go crazy; they can go home and live their lives as they usually do and only visit the Mansion by night. They have to endure 3 nights here, and if they survive, the money is theirs to keep. Most of that money will go to one niece of the deceased, Mercedes Benz (Alma Rosa Aguirre) while the rest will go to whoever finds it, because it's hidden. So, every night, the doctor, the lawyer, the girlfriend, the maid, the chauffeur, they all will try to outsmart the rest in a crazy race until the executioner shows up and start leaving less and less people to enjoy wealth. Is then when Mercedez Benz's boyfriend hires a private detective (Clavillazo) to find the hidden money fast and stop the killings. Very good comedy with hand made characters perfectly well designed and cast. There's nothing creepier than the maid (Enriqueta Reza), o Manuel Dondé, or José Chávez Throwe

The Gadfly (Ovod), the book and the film

Ethel Lillian Voynich Boole is the author of the novel "Gadfly" which was enormously popular in the Soviet Union. The Russians even named a crater of the Venus planet after it.

The novel set in Italy in the 1800's, which was a time of revolt and uprisings and features the hero as a mysterious satirist who is only known by his pseudonym Gadfly. At once a romance, tragedy and heroic story, it's got passionate characters, dark secrets, betrayal and atonement, and expertly incorporates them into the author's controversial theme - the criticism of the church.

The movie was a great success, partly due to the charisma of young Oleg Strizenov in his screen debut. He was very convincing as romantic and tragic Arthur as he moves from being a theological student with Padre Montanelli (his father figure - powerful performance by Nikolai Simonov) to the life of a satirist, revolutionary, and great enemy of the church. The best Soviet actors played in the movie; the novel was adapted into the screenplay by very famous (and deservingly so) writer, Victor Shklovsky. But the real treasure of the film is the music written by Dmitry Shostakovich. He composed an orchestral suite for The Gadfly. It's been a long time since I saw "Ovod" but I still remember it fondly as a very good film with a brilliant soundtrack.

Perry Lopez has problems in prison from Ted de Corsia and Leo Gordon

"The Steel Jungle" is quite a good film noir, set in a prison. It's not a prison story as such and doesn't follow the usual prison plots that involve riots, breakouts, new convicts getting indoctrinated, various prison types and stereotypes. It does have a corrupt guard, however (Gregory Walcott).

The cast has real depth. Perry Lopez stars. He's a bookie whose mob protection ran out and now he's in prison where the mob head, ruthless Ted de Corsia is too, with right hand man Leo Gordon. You'll know him when you see him, as he usually plays heavies as in "Riot in Cell Block 11", two years earlier. Lopez has a pregnant wife, Beverly Garland, a very fine actress who makes what she does look easy. Lopez finds a friend in prison shrink Kenneth Tobey, in a break from his sci-fi work of the 50s. The tough warden is Walter Abel.

Lopez is no rat, and he refuses to give up de Corsia or the mobsters. Still, he gets into a very difficult situation. Outside, his wife is having a difficult pregnancy and he really wants to get out to give her moral support. (By the way, Alison Hayes has a few scenes in a supporting role as a gal who lives down the hall from Garland and Lopez.) Inside, Lopez sees something he shouldn't and he's feeling pressure from de Corsia. Abel is pressuring him too. The story follows a number of tense twists and turns. Despite being somewhat predictable, it's surprisingly effective. Warner Brothers still had some style and meat to its crime stories as it did in earlier decades.

A Dramatic Love Story with Romance, Fight of Classes and Revenge

In Corsica, the altruistic Dr. Valerio (Georges Marchal) is the only doctor in the island and is always busy with his many clients. His spoiled wife Angela (Nelly Borgeaud) is feeling bored with her tedious life and wants to return to Nice. Dr. Valerio is a friend of Sandro Galli (Giani Esposito), who is in deep love with his wife Magda (Brigitte Elloy) that is very ill and needs to rest. Sandro is neglecting his duties of the caretaker of the farm of the wealthy and powerful Gorzone (Jean-Jacques Delbo) to give more attention to his wife. Angela has a nervous breakdown and decides to travel to Nice to spend some time with her father.

When the Chief of Police Fasaro (Julien Bertheau) summons Dr. Valerio to examine a little girl that was raped by her grandfather, he meets the gorgeous and elegant widow Clara Bernacci (Lucia Bosé). They immediately fall in love with each other and have a love affair. Meanwhile, Gorzone fires Sandro and hires another caretaker. Dr. Valerio visits Gorzone and asks him to hire Sandro back, and the man agrees but he lies to Dr. Valerio. When the new employee arrives at Sandro's home, he transports Clara in a wagon to the house of his friend Pietro (Robert Le Fort). However she does not resist to the journey and dies. Sandro gets a gun and goes to the manor of Gorzone to revenge the death of his beloved wife.

"Cela s'Appelle l'Aurore" is another wonderful film of Luis Buñuel with a dramatic love story with romance, fight of classes and revenge. Buñuel makes an accessible film without the use of surreal imagery or hidden messages. However his style is present in the critic to the behavior of the upper classes and the hypocrisy of the Catholic Church with the sequence when Sandro arrives at Gorzone's mansion and the priest asks him to go back home. Georges Marchal has a magnificent performance in a beautiful role of a doctor that helps the poor ones. The remarkable beauty, class and elegance of Lucia Bosé is still very impressive in the present days. My vote is eight.

Review :

It is so bad it is enjoyable

I tuned to this movie by mistake, thinking it was something else. (I have Verizon FiOS and their movie descriptions are really bare bones.) But it was so bad that I was curious to see how bad it could be. As an earlier commenter noted, the role of the younger brother was played as an over the top caricature. I don't think that the actor intended that, but I guess the Director didn't care.

The gimmick of this "B" western is that the leader of the criminal gang uses a bull whip instead of a gun.

The script is also ridiculous. At one point the "bad guy" (the leader, well acted by Strother Martins, of one of the criminal splinter gangs that evolved from the Civil War's infamous Quantrill Raiders) tells the "good guys" that he will send 4 of his men out to negotiate, and they will be unarmed. The leader of the "good guys," the Governor takes this known depraved killer's word that they will be unarmed. But there is no reason for them to go outside to negotiate because they have no problem communicating from inside the house they occupy, and there is no reason why so many are needed for the negotiation.

The worst sin is watch this movie

When the film opened in theaters in Mexico city, in 1957 I was a 10 year old kid, so the censors put me out of the line outside the theater. Then the film disappeared for more of forty years, because the leading lady Christianne Martel, former 1953 Miss France, after a very short career in Hollywood ended in the Mexican cinema and became very popular. Eventually she married a prominent Mexican politician, that baned all her films from exhibition, even in television. Suddenly last year, the film appeared in DVD. so I run to buy it. No nudity at all, all the time some plant or animal gets the closeup to protect the "private parts" from the camera. Some times Adam and Eve look like martians due to the rubber "leotards" that the couple wears in some scenes where no bush or object protect them. Bad taste, bad acting (If there is any) even car bored eastmancolor. Pedro Almodóver or John Waters will love the film if they had the chance to see it.
