Cafe owner Stan Fabian joins Joanie Daniel and her "brother" Frank in a scheme to unearth a "fortune in stolen gold buried by Frank" in Germany during World War II, and Stan is unaware that Joanie and Frank are undercover agents trying to get a confession from Stan of a murder he committed in Germany. Joanie plays on Stan's love for her, insisting he join the Army and so gain access to the supposed hidden treasure , buried in what is now a U.S. Army reservation. Entrapment is the word used now.

Elaborate trap is set to catch a WW 2 black market operator and killer
"The Crooked Web" is a second-tier film noir whose main attractions are its leads: Frank Lovejoy, Mari Blanchard and Richard Denning. The title accurately describes the main feature of the story, which is a web that is spun upon elaborate deceptive grounds in order to catch a criminal who had committed a crime during World War 2 and escaped prosecution by returning to America.
Lovejoy is capable of playing good guy or bad guy equally well. So is Denning. They put those talents to good use. Ms. Blanchard is typically a vamp, and there is no exception here. But she has the talent to be a vamp in a variety of ways, which always makes her parts interesting.
The direction didn't quite bring out the potential in the story, and the story at times lacks spark. This is why I say the effort is second-tier. Nevertheless, being a film noir fan, it was good to see a crisp widescreen print.
