Routine land-locked pirate adventure

Anthony Dexter stars as the pirate leader seeking buried treasure underneath the site of a village church presided over by Father Felipe (Lon Chaney Jr). Shot in color on location in Mexico (set in 1777 Salvador), this is an unexceptional land-locked outing with few redeeming features. Mainly interesting to see Chaney cast against type as a sympathetic priest, also Robert Clarke as a lovelorn villager who gets whipped for his troubles. Anthony Dexter began his career as "Valentino" (1951), but soon settled into lesser features such as "Fire Maidens of Outer Space" (1955), "The Story of Mankind" (1957), "12 to the Moon" (1959), and "The Phantom Planet" (1961). Dexter retired by 1967, and died in 2001 at the age of 88.

Fellini in a narration of the cruelty

The story takes place in Rome and surrounding area in 1953. Augusto (Broderick Crawford), Roberto (Franco Fabrizi), Carlo "Picaso" ((Richard Basehart) and the Baron Vargas (Giacomo Gabrielli) form a band of robbers. Augusto is the protagonist of its execution, he has 48 years and he feels trapped by the age and loneliness. Roberto want to emulate Johnny Ray and looking for fun and enjoy life. Carlo is married to Iris (Giulietta Masina), is a painter frustrated and steals to sustain the family. What the principle of the film begins as a comedy soon becomes drama to observe the plight of the victims of the scams, the expressions that show. As the film, we believe that all of this is doing reflect the characters, but not the case that, there seems to be awareness in the characters. The scene in which Augusto is identified by one of their victims in the cinema before his daughter and the conversation that maintains with a girl with poliomyelitis, are insurmountable. The great music of Nino Rota, and the good photography in black and white prepare a film with more crudely morality. of Federico Fellini

Review :

Patricia Neal falls for two vultures

I have to take issue with the review by Matt_Wall, which stated it was "hard to believe this script was written in the early 1950s." The plot is about gas companies vs. conservationists trying to save the California condor. Gas was first drilled for in 1821, and there have been conservationists since before Thoreau, so this was an old story by 1950. Furthermore, California's Audubon Society had been fighting to preserve the condor's habitat since the 1930s. So Mr. Wall seems to be among the disturbingly long list of people who assume nothing much of interest happened before their own era.

What's more, this environmentally conscious movie is hardly a first for Hollywood. To name a very famous example, which this film resembles, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" (1939) centered around the establishment of a national boys' camp against dam-builders.

The script, credited to I.A.L. Diamond among others, has enough wit so that it hardly needed the screwball spin (or the accompanying silly musical score). Victor Mature at his oiliest is perfect to play the Washington lobbyist named Steve, though he's not exactly a light-footed comic actor. On the other hand, Edmund Gwenn and Patricia Neal bring their reliable gifts to their roles; both exude intelligence, dignity, and disarming honesty.

The IMDb entry for "Memorable quotes" is empty, but there are more than a few good lines in this all-but-forgotten film:

"No one has ever accused me of being unpatriotic. In fact, I was the first man in the House to speak out against the Japanese beetle."

Congressman: "Is it your practice to distribute gifts to people in high places?" Lobbyist: "Only to those who accept them."

"You know how it is in Washington. The more you deny something, the more everybody believes it."

(Said of a widow) "That's quite an accomplishment, surviving a Southern congressman."

(After a wolf whistle) "That's the mating call of the Potomac night owl."

"That's no worse than a politician masquerading as a statesman."

Journalist: "You'd barbecue your grandmother on the Capitol steps for a buck." Lobbyist: "And you'd be right there with your little notebook taking down her last word."

(Said of the lobbyist) "Steve hasn't an enemy in the world, but I like him anyway."

TV: "Keep well stocked with Hammerschlagger's beer. Remember, in beer, it's the water that counts." Barfly: "And Hammerschlagger beer is practically all water."

Review :

Not so much a movie as a raid on the combat footage library

This film, with the merest of story lines to hold it together, is really just an excuse to cobble together stock combat footage, both American and German, of a mixture of American bombers, mostly B-25 Mitchells, but also B-17 Flying Fortresses, B-24 Liberators, and an occasional B-26 Marauder, all of which get intercut without regard to any sense of continuity. All cockpit interiors are of a B-25, interior fuselage shots appear to be B-26s, and in the latter half of this so-called "film", on a mission in B-24s, the close-up of the cockpit is a B-26. High-level B-24 group footage is mixed with Ploesti low-level training and mission footage without any regard to believability. Several crash sequences created for the movie are hokey-looking models. What little new-shot footage of flying done is all of training B-25s in a southwestern U.S. location without unit markings or tailcodes, intercut with stock footage of flying formations in combat paintschemes. The same stock shots of German 88 mm. anti-aircraft guns are reused several times.

When the main pilot's "B-24" is hit, the long-shot of it going down is a Boeing B-17, followed by a cheesy Liberator model crashing. Cut to five "survivors", supposedly down in Yugoslavia, who are repatriated within minutes, with the film wrapping up almost immediately thereafter.

As for a plot, there really isn't one. Bad acting, poor script - stay away from this stinker unless you just want to see combat film.

Well worth watching

Despie my interest in post war films and all things Naval, I have not heard of this film. How I have missed it is beyond me.

George Baker is fantastic as the lead and Bill Owen, known to me as Compo, is a revelation. Richard Attenborough is perfect as always and the roles played by Bernard Lee and Virginia McKenna are small but superb.

I must now read the book to see how the author handled the many strands and ending, which is a little disappointing in the film. Few people in today's Britain understand the stress and strain on on those demobbed at the end of WW2 but I suspect that with growing redundancies of front line troops in Afghanistan, the stories and threads explored in this film will strike a modern chord.

See the original....

Roy Earle is a professional criminal--one of the toughest and best at his job. When he is unexpectedly released from prison, it is because someone big wanted a big heist and they pulled strings to get him. On his way to the location of his new partners up in the Sierras, he meets a very poor family and befriends them. He also later befriends a cute little dog. Both these acts of kindness are very atypical for such a hardened man and, sadly, BOTH end up causing him nothing but grief in the end.

I am a film purist when it comes to remakes. My opinion has always been that if the original film is great, it shouldn't be remade--remakes are only for films with SERIOUS flaws that can corrected in the remake. So, I am a VERY difficult sell for a film like "I Died a Thousand Times", as it's a remake both of the classic Bogart picture "High Sierra" as well as Joel McCrea's "Colorado Territory"==and both films have a higher IMDb rating as well.

"I Died a Thousand Times" turns out to be an extremely well made film--mostly because it is practically an exact copy of "High Sierra" and because Jack Palance was quite nice in the lead. The only major differences is the wonderful color film stock--it looks great because of the wonderful mountain locations. As for the acting, it's about on par with the original. So, if it offers no real major advantage, why not just see the original--especially since it stars Humphrey Bogart and Ida Lupino and is a classic. This 1955 version could have become a classic--if the story had been original. Good but see the original!

Routine Audie Murphy western with a slightly more interesting plot.

Taking place just prior to the start of the civil war, Audie Murphy plays a junior army officer who is sympathetic to the plight of the local Navajo Indians and is a good friend of Navajo chief Menquito. A new commanding officer who is from the south is appointed to the post who convinced by Confederate agitators to stir up trouble with the Navajo Indians and send Audie and large column troops out on wild goose chase so the Confederates can gain control of the western territories. Of course Audie gets wind of nefarious plot and prevents further bloodshed.

This film would be an otherwise routine "Indians unjustly forced to go on the warpath by scheming white men" story, had it not been for the Confederate conspiracy angle. Audie Murphy is well... Audie Murphy. If you like Audie Murphy (I do) you will like him here. If you don"t there is no reason why you should like him here. Robert Stirling and Joan Evans are unconvincing as Southerners. Their Southern accents vary through out the film. Film buffs will enjoy seeing many familiar faces in the cast (Bob Steele, Greg Palmer, Russell Johnson, Dennis Weaver and Ray Collins.)

Watch The Big Chase Trailer :

Review :

The big chase of "The Big Chase" was shot in 3-D and released as a short.

And that 3-D version, called BANDIT ISLAND, does not survive in that format but it is all here in THE BIG CHASE. And it is flatter than a flitter. On Movie Connections we learn that BANDIT ISLAND was edited into THE BIG CHASE. No, we learn wrong, as it was the other way around, although the short was released prior to THE BIG CHASE film. A second unit shot the 3-D footage for the express purpose of editing it from the overall film. No way, Lippert Pictures would have shot a 3-D short, and then gather most of that cast again a year later to film a different feature movie with a story framing the footage from the 3-D short. BANDIT ISLAND was all second-unit work done by Gilbert Warrenton on camera; Robert L. Lippert Jr. as the director, assisted by Stanley Newfield and Ernie Johnson was the Prop Master for that sequence, which means he came up with the dummy that gang-leader Brad Bellows (Jim Davis)pot-shotted out of the helicopter.

Plot for THE BIG CHASE has Korean-War vet Grayson returning from that Police Action and joining the L.A. Police Academy, which we learn in a flashback told by Police Lt. Ned Daggert (Douglas Kennedy) to story-hunting reporter Milton Graves (Joe Flynn as Joseph Flynn.) We also learn that Pete's wife Doris is in a family way and eight months or so along, and she is worried because her doctor (Wheaton Chambers) has told her she is anemic---and this must be an internal condition, because Adele Jergens was never anemic---but this doesn't keep her from lighting up a cigarette and downing her anemic pills with a shot of bourbon. No, this was a 50's thing and was not intended as some kind of PSA about the dos-and-donts of being pregnant.

Meanwhile, over to the state pen, where Brad Bellows (played by Davis and not named Brad Meggs as shown on site) and Jim Meggs (played by Jay Lawrence and not named Jim Bellows, as shown on site) are planning a big heist as soon as Brad gets out of prison and has six months to plan this caper. As executed, the caper appears to have been planned in six seconds. Meanwhile, Doris frets over the safety of her husband on his appointed rounds and worries about her anemia and smokes some more cigarettes to help her bridge her current problems, although the chances she may give birth to a pea head if she doesn't lay off the nicotine doesn't occur to her, since the Surgeon General hasn't yet got around to screwing up the beautiful cigarette-package labels with those unsightly warning labels that came later.

Okay, enough plot set-up. Bellows and Miggs and Kitty, who is Bellows wife but wimpy motel-owner Phil Arnold thinks she is his wife and space does not allow the telling of this segment of the story as it is the one highlight of the total film, or films if you insist. And, riding in the back seat of the stolen convertible is none other than Lon Chaney Jr., who, despite the fact he is third-billed, has only about ten minutes of footage to go with his zero lines of dialogue, unless a grunt or two counts as dialogue. They rob a payroll-truck and take off in their stolen car, and wheel down the Hollywood Freeway and are soon spotted by Grayson and his Car-22 partner, and the big chase part of THE BIG CHASE now commences. Kitty, the designated driver, is shot during this pursuit, although Chaney is directly between her and Grayson's line of fire, and the curved path this bullet takes is akin to the path of the 1963 Magic Bullet in Dallas and should disarm those conspiracy nuts who think a bullet can't dart and dodge here and there.

Davis, from the passenger side, guides the car to a halt down at the S.P. yards, and there is a lot of running around, over, between and under some S.P. box cars and even a shot of a slow-moving train engine about to run over the 3-D audience even it does lose a bit when Warrenton's camera is jerked sideways. Chaney gets his at the RR yard, and while he is getting his, Bellows and Miggs hotfoot it over to some other L.A. neighborhood and steal another car and it is about this point that one begins to question just how much time Bellows really put into planning this caper. And they get clean away or would have if the motel owner who thought he was married to Kitty hadn't gotten P.O'ed when he learned that Bellows had dumped the body of his ex-non wife into the La Brea tar pits, and tells all. So Daggert radio's Grayson and tells him the plan and he needs to get over to some park somewhere where a helicopter is waiting for him. The next shot shows the two pursue-es slogging across a beach to get to a rowboat. Yes, a rowboat. They row this boat out about fifty miles to where there is a motor boat moored to a buoy. They board the motor boat and head for an island---which it appears is why they called the 3-D short BANDIT ISLAND---and it is never revealed just what mode of transportation Bellows had chartered to escape from the island on, as Grayson, now really mad about Bellows shooting his prop-dummy sidekick, supplied by Props Master Ernie Johnson, has landed. And, soon after some more 3-D scuffling and camera-ducking, the 3-D part that isn't in 3-D anymore, ends and we get back to the hospital where Adele Jergens has delivered a bouncing, healthy---one can hope---baby girl and is frettin' because she hasn't provided her husband with a bouncing baby boy, but he tells her it is okay, as one of the next 15 is bound to be a boy...and she reaches for her pack of Camels.

Finis.

Review :

THE ISLAND PRINCESS (Paolo Moffo and Pietro Francisci, 1954) **

I’d never heard of this peplum before it turned up recently on late-night Italian TV; however, with a bit of research, I realized that it was listed on the “Leonard Maltin Film Guide”. In any case, what particularly drew me to the film was the fact that it starred Marcello Mastroianni – soon to become one of Italy’s foremost leading men and international stars; he’s appropriately dashing in the garb of the Spanish armada but, then, his distinctive voice is dubbed by someone else (films from this country were famously shot M.O.S.)!

Anyway, it turned out to be a very ordinary spectacle – even without taking into consideration the extremely choppy (and muddy) quality of the print on display: in fact, while the film’s ‘official’ running-time is given as 105 minutes, the copy I watched ran for a measly 76! Incidentally, the action sequences (though little of these actually remain in the film as shown on TV!) are here credited to Pietro Francisci – best-known for helming the two Steve Reeves Hercules vehicles from later on in the decade which brought him stardom and cemented the popularity of the peplum genre; for the record, a solo genre effort by Francisci – ATTILA (1954), with Anthony Quinn in the title role – was released within days of this one!

The plot involves the Spanish conquistadores’, ahem, conquest of the Canary Islands; no sooner have they landed that one of the leaders of the expedition (Mastroianni, of course) meets and falls for a local girl (peplum regular Silvana Pampanini)…without realizing that she’s the current ruler’s daughter! While the old man is willing to negotiate peace terms with the Spaniards, a hotheaded young warrior wants none of it and conspires with the King’s chief adviser to oust their forces from the land. To begin with, they organize an ambush of the Armada who, naturally, retaliate by burning down one of their villages; then, the King is poisoned so that the girl assumes command – and take the rebellious warrior for a husband, since she needs a strong man by her side at such a precarious moment!

Needless to say, Pampanini has conflicting emotions about all of this: she loves Mastroianni but can’t bear the treatment of her people by the Spanish (despite being merely the direct result of their own provocation!); eventually, she gives in to the warrior’s demands…but, then, thinks back on it and leaves him reeling at the altar during the wedding ceremony! At the end, the two parties engage in open battle (again, it’s so extensively trimmed as to be confusing and deeply unsatisfying) – with the lovers finally re-united against an evocative backdrop of sea and sand, where the fleeing warrior had just then been cornered and dispatched.

"The sands of the desert have barbecued my bunions."

That immortal line sums it up, folks. This campy desert feature has even more gags than it has harem girls, and they're often as funny as they are unbelievable. Paul Henreid plays a dashing magician (with a dash of Vaudeville) in a kind of low-rent "Arabian Nights" empire. Henreid's famous role in "Casablanca" must have led to a fascination with the Sahara, because he did more than one sword-and-sandal picture later, though they were an odd fit. Patricia Medina, who had her own long career in costumers, is beautiful as the "siren" but doesn't have much chemistry with Henreid. The great character actor Hans Conreid, as Henreid's wise-cracking sidekick, utters the immortal line quoted above, among others. I would like to think that some minor studio executive said, "Paul Henreid and Hans Conreid? Aren't they the same guy?" That's the spirit in which this one was made.

Watch Rio 40 Graus Trailer :

Review :

Landmark film that changed Brazilian cinema is still thrilling and alive

Rio de Janeiro, a Sunday in the summer of 1954. As the blazing heat reaches 40ºC (hence the title), the camera follows a number of characters who at some point interact, even for a brief moment. Thus we meet five young boys from a slum (favela) who sell peanuts at tourist spots (Copacabana beach, the Sugar Loaf, the statue of Christ atop Corcovado Hill, the Maracanã soccer stadium, the Zoo); a "malandro" (swindler) from the same favela who learns that the girl he's trying to seduce is getting engaged to another man; a working-class girl who fears her slippery military boyfriend will turn her away when she tells him she's pregnant with his child; a rich, crass, hick landowner who comes to Rio only to learn that the language of corrupt politicians and businessmen is universal; a mature soccer idol who realizes his career is over when he gets replaced by a young player in a decisive match...

Inspired by the principles of Italian Neo-Realism -- depicting everyday problems of "real" people; outdoor shooting; mixing professional and non-professional actors; refusing "beautiful" shots etc -- "Rio 40 Graus" has its own grammar and qualities. The multiple characters and parallel stories rivals Rossellini (and precedes Altman, for that matter) and, though very ambitious, is quite accomplished. The editing is remarkable, with an electric pace that demands an intelligent, quick-minded audience and perfectly translates the hectic rhythm of a big city like Rio. It's also shockingly frank in its depiction of poverty, prejudice (social, sexual and racial), corruption, never before shown quite like that in Brazilian cinema.

Being the oeuvre of a self-declared leftist, it shows no mercy towards the bourgeoisie (grand and petty), the powerful and the rich. But it's not a pamphlet by a bitter angry man; it has rigor but it also has humor, poetry, musicality (making the great song by Zé Keti "A Voz do Morro" the film's leitmotiv) and, above all, the love for Rio — which, by the way, is called in the opening credits the real "star" of the film. The film sometimes yields into sentimentality (as many Neo-Realist films did, by the way) but the depiction of the fight between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie has strong political roots and meaning.

"Rio 40 Graus" was the feature debut of director Nelson Pereira dos Santos, then a 26 year-old assistant director from São Paulo, who had been living in Rio for a short time. After the critical triumph of "Rio 40 Graus" he pursued a long and important career, directing great films like "Boca de Ouro" (1962), "Como Era Gostoso Meu Francês" (1971) and "Memórias do Cárcere" (1983) and above all the extraordinary "Vidas Secas" (1963). He also produced many important features and documentaries, was instrumental to the debut of other seminal filmmakers (Glauber Rocha, Roberto Santos, Ruy Guerra etc), was the great inspirer of the Cinema Novo (New Cinema) movement, and is still active in his late 70s.

"Rio40ºC" is unanimously considered the single most important Brazilian film of the 1950s, one that forever changed Brazilian cinema. In a time when film production in Brazil was dreamily striving to become an "industry" controlled by big or medium-sized studios (especially Vera Cruz in São Paulo and Atlântida in Rio) with international majors (Columbia, Fox, WB, etc) getting the biggest share of profits at the distribution end, NPS had the vision and the courage to produce his first feature independently, using a cooperative system -- 59 friends shared the cost (and later the profits) along with the 76 people who worked in the film for free (or peanuts). He borrowed a defective old camera from the INC (National Institute of Cinema, now defunct), and had it fixed by DP Hélio Silva. The principal crew (15 people) lived in a two-room apartment during the shooting. How's that for idealism and commitment!

Tha main shooting was finished by mid-1954, and in September 1955 the film was ready to open, but its public exhibition was vetoed by Rio's State Department on the account that it showed an "ugly" image of the city, even alleging that in Rio the thermometers never reached 40ºC!! (of course they do, and beyond). It was the FIRST Brazilian film censored in its ENTIRETY. The censorship generated a huge counter-attack by the press, intellectuals and artists. All the fuss eventually helped its promotion and it finally opened in March 1956 in a good number of theaters all over the country. Although not exactly a box-office hit, it was hailed by most critics and, above all, it proved to young aspiring Brazilian filmmakers that independent movie-making in Brazil was feasible, thus paving the way to the Cinema Novo movement that revolutionized Brazilian movies in the 1960s.

"Rio 40ºC" is a rare case of a historically important film still being genuinely enjoyable and riveting, dated only in its schematic "good vs evil = black vs white = proletariat vs bourgeois" treatment (and the occasional artificiality of some of the kids' dubbed voices). It's mandatory for all interested in Third World/socially concerned cinema, and thrilling for anyone who likes movies with something more than mindless entertainment and special effects. It's the very first of a lineage of great Brazilian movies about social issues involving abandoned childhood and the favelas, that would later include classics like "Cinco Vezes Favela" (omnibus film, 1962), Sucksdorff's "My Home is Copacabana" (1965), Babenco's "Pixote" (1980) and, of course, Meirelles' "City of God" (2002), which was definitely influenced by "Rio 40ºC" in the multi-character, episodic approach. "Rio 40ºC" is "City of God"'s still exciting, blood-throbbing and heart-pounding granddad.

Great bad guy vs. motorcycle cops! Lots of old Harley's!

I saw this movie as a kid when i was about 13 or so. I remeber this as one of the coolest movies I have ever seen. I am sure, now it would seem a little less dramatic, but it has stayed with me all these years. There is one scene where the truck hijackers are stopped by a cycle cop and when they get the chance to knock him out they do. They then take him and put him under the tires of the big rig and pretty violent for back then back up over him. A young chuck Conners, Ralph Meeker and Keenan Wynn make this a must see for biker, crime and film noir fans. I believe Ted Turner owns this movie and I wish he would release it on video. Enjoy the film if you can ever see it.

Tough guy turns on mob.

"Casey Martin" can take the final fall for a life of crime or cut a deal with T-Men to go undercover. It takes a tough guy, up against the wall, to tackle the assignment. The actors and script follow through to deliver a good tale. It's surprising that major studios were still making Black & White films in 1955, but the format seems to fit this story.

Gold and danger beneath the sea

City Beneath the Sea came on BBC2 one Saturday afternoon some years ago and I was pleased I taped it. This has never been released on video so I was glad I kept this TV copy.

Two divers come to Jamaca to recover some gold on a sunken ship off the coast. One evening, they visit a club and meet two girls and both subsequently fall in love with them. Rivalry then breaks out between the two men over who will keep the gold when retrieved. The ship sunk near the ruins of an underwater city (not Atlantis) and the locals are against the men recovering the gold because the city is one of their tabu's. Not surprisingly, danger looms when the city collapses as a result of an undersea earthquake, trapping one of the divers. He is rescued by his mate and neither of them get the gold in the end.

Despite being a bow budget movie, the underwater scenes in City Beneath the Sea are not that bad.

The cast includes Robert Ryan and Anthony Quinn as the divers and Mala Powers and Susan Ball as the love interests. This also stars George Mathews and Woody Strode.

Watching this movie is a good way to spend just under 90 minutes one afternoon or evening. Very enjoyable.

No Passion for Newton and Johns

The British-owned South Georgia islands welcome a new governor, young Donald Sinden (as Ewart Gray). Because his home is not ready, Mr. Sinden temporarily stays with beautiful missionary Glynis Johns (as Martha Jones) and meets the area's most colorful resident - boozing beachcomber Robert Newton (as Edward "The Honorable Ted" Wilson). This sounds like a steamy W. Somerset Maugham story because it is ("The Vessel of Wrath"). His drinking repeatedly gets Mr. Newton in trouble and Sinden finally sentences him to three months hard labor. This is better than being deported to Australia...

Newton prefers much younger native women as lovers, and also attracts the straight-laced Ms. Johns, who crosses paths with him while performing missionary work for her doctor brother Paul Rogers (as Owen Jones). During an outbreak of cholera, Newton and Johns become mutually attracted. Sad to say, neither Newton nor Johns hold much interest. Even worse, their romance is not believable. The most obvious solution to this problem would have been to cast an actress who could add a "spinster" quality to the female role. This is not to say there is no "chemistry" possible for Newton and Johns - they just don't have it here...
