Vegas way back when

Some vintage Las Vegas location photography helps this slight romance of a green rodeo cowboy (Carleton Carpenter, in an understated bid for MGM stardom) and a conniving but warmhearted gambling-den floozy (the always underrated Jan Sterling). Vegas doesn't seem the big soulless megalopolis it grew to be, and Keenan Wynn helps out as the owner of an exceedingly modest casino. It turns into a road picture in the second half, and you get to see just how desolate the surrounding Nevada countryside was. Not a whole lot happens, and it's over before you know it, but it's refreshingly unpretentious, and it doesn't go for the expected happy ending. Nice little B picture.

Abdulla Is Not So Great, But Kay Kendall Is!

Kay Kendall become a popular cult idol throughout the 1960s. After her tragic death from leukemia in 1959, movie lovers were dosed with constant repeats of Genevieve, Fast and Loose, Doctor in the House, The Constant Husband, Simon and Laura, Quentin Durward, Les Girls, The Reluctant Debutante and Once More With Feeling. In fact, every film she ever made from Genevieve (1953 onwards was constantly revived not only on television but even theatrically. With two odd exceptions! Meet Mr Lucifer (1953) was never shown. Nor was Abdulla the Great. Television executives had good reason to blackball Meet Mr Lucifer, a merciless satire on the whole TV industry, but Abdulla the Great? One of Kay's best roles, in which she is gorgeously photographed by Lee Garmes and most stylishly costumed? Even the usually hard-to-please Monthly Film Bulletin singled out her performance, describing it as "most persuasive".

Abdulla, of course, is meant to be taken as a blatant impersonation of King Farouk. But whether you get the satirical intent or not, doesn't really matter. Ratoff invigorates the role with his usual gusty pizazz. In his playing, in fact, he comes across as far more powerful a figure than is represented by his timid, rather routine direction, though perhaps he gave a few good acting tips to Kay Kendall who is absolutely outstanding here. These are easily her finest moments in the cinema, easily creaming her horn solo in Genevieve or her constant combats with a tempestuous Yul Brynner in Once More With Feeling or her decorative alliance with real-life husband Rex Harrison in The Reluctant Debutante.

The other main players are somewhat less than adequate, particularly Kay's love interest, Captain Farid (woodenly enacted by Sydney Chaplin). If memory serves me correctly, Alex D'Arcy as Abdulla's chief adviser is also disappointingly lackluster in a role that would seem made-to-order.

Abdulla was quite lavishly produced, obviously on authentic Egyptian locations, and superbly photographed by ace cinematographer Lee Garmes (who deserved an Academy Award for his work on Gone With The Wind—he photographed almost the entire first hour—but didn't get one).

The Talking Blues War

Edward Dmytryk returned from the McCarthy hearings to direct this slightly expanded stage show of eight World War Two soldiers, sitting around in a wrecked basement, waiting for their chance to go on furlough .... but the sergeant --- played by a Lee Marvin so young that he still has dark hair -- wants to go out and find a missing man. The endless talk talk talk is alleviated occasionally as Marvin goes out to see the company's captain, who also lives in a wrecked basement.

Dmytryk and the screenwriters have done very little to expand this for the screen. You may, if you like, interpret this as a failure of nerve of Dmytryk's part: he had originally refused to testify as to who was a Communist before the House Unamerican Activities Committee. A few months in jail broke his resolve, and he spent the remainder of his career directing ever larger, ever glossier and ever emptier films.

The amazing career of master magician Harry Houdini is presented from his beginnings with a carnival "wild man" act to his emergence as an internationally-acclaimed illusionist, From his dramatic escape from a locked safe under the frozen Detroit River to an even more improbable one from a locked cell in Scotland Yard, he never failed to please and astound his audiences. Although Houdini's tricks are achieved through his marvelous physical dexterity and innate sleight-of-hand, he courted death with the hazardous illusions he performed and his compulsive quest to make contact with the spirit world.

Just in case

What an odd coincidence, just in case you didn't know it: Harry Houdini was born in Budapest, his real name was Weisz Erik (Eric Weisz). Tony Curtis was born to parents both born in Budapest, his real name is Bernard Schwartz. Tony Curtis, nearing his eighties, still speaks Hungarian fluently.

Budapest & Budapest ... Weisz and Schwartz - White and Black.

Though this movie is pure romantic fiction, rather than a biopic, it is thoroughly enjoyable, thanks to Ms. Leigh and Mr. Curtis. (i.e. Houdini wasn't born on Halloween's day but on 24. March in 1874, and he had escaped from the Chinese Torture Chamber a lot of times, and as such, he didn't die the way depicted in this movie - he was killed by a punch on his stomach, a trick he wasn't prepared to)

Still, see this picture if you get a chance: it is colorful and exciting.

Review :

A good bottom-half of a double-bill

Compact, well-paced, and easy on the eyes (as well as the brain), this is a worthy example of the "second features" coming out of Hollywood in the early to mid 1950s. It knows its place on the bottom half of a double-bill and has no pretensions to rise above its status.

The story line about the brothers-turned-rivals is satisfyingly predictable and intermixed with it is footage of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, back in the days when it was all-male and all-white. There's also a bit of aerial footage as the two brothers move from Annapolis to Pensacola to Corpus Christi and finally to Korea. There's even a street-scene shot of Tokyo in the post-war era.

John Derek, Diana Lynn, and Kevin McCarthy make an attractive threesome -- particularly in that glorious Technicolor of the era -- but despite all the obvious opportunities for shower-room and locker-room scenes at the Academy, there's very little beefcake. So much testosterone, so little skin! There is, however, a brief scene of a swimsuit-clad Diana Lynn and John Derek running out of the ocean and onto a beach, so we do get a glimpse of Derek's bare chest just about a year before it was caressed by Vincent Price's whip in 1956's "The Ten Commandments." Alvy Moore supplies the comic relief. (Does anyone "buy" him as a naval cadet?)
