Golden Anniversary comments for The Silver Chalice

At 50 years of age this film should be categorized in the "cult" genre. Starting off a a biblical tale of how the cup from which Jesus drank is sculpted into a silver chalice it quickly turns into "The Rise and Fall of Simon the Magician". The chalice is finally lost and so is the storyline.

Paul Newman, as Basil the sculptor, makes his movie debut and is not all that bad considering the dialogue he had to work with. Jack Palance, as Simon, is simply superb. Insane and madly ambitious he portrays a magician who thinks he can become a "new and improved" version of Jesus. It's hard to accept the character of Helena first played by Natalie Wood as a young slave and then later by Virginia Mayo as a treacherous vixen. There are a host of familiar actors in supporting and minor roles. Notice Lorne Greene as St. Peter before he strapped on his gun and married three wives to found the Ponderosa. Also, in a quick moment, you'll notice Strother("What we have here is a failure to communicate")Martin as the father of the crippled child. See if you can find the rest. The sets are more prone for stage than screen. Huge columns, statues and archways with stairs and domed buildings and more stairs. Everything is incorrectly sterile and spotless. There is one light point when, at Nero's feast, a particular dish is described as "aged grasshoppers in honey fried to a golden brown". Not bad for 1st century AD. Maybe the "colonel" was a lot older then we thought. All in all it's a fun movie to watch. This film might have its drawbacks but Palance is worth it. See Jack fly.

Creepy little item has an obvious message at the center...

This unknown little MGM item is based on a Charlotte Armstrong story (American mystery writer who wrote THE UNSUSPECTED and DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK, among others). The main focus is on the little boy (BILLY GRAY) who thinks the new menacing neighbor is the man who killed his faithfuldog and he's played with professional assurance by Gray. In fact, he has to carry the film since GEORGE MURPHY and NANCY DAVIS are relegated to roles on the sidelines.

It's directed in competent style by Arthur Bradley, photographed in more than competent style by John Alton, full of moody B&W imagery, but the story is so thin it's almost transparent and winds up in a brief running time of one hour and five minutes.

The last ten minutes wind up the story in good fashion, although the ending is a bit hard to swallow, as contrived and synthetic as any character-driven tale could be. KURT KAZNAR is the mean looking neighbor who suddenly turns out to be Mr. Good Guy when we learn about his past. The simple moral of this fable is that you can't judge a book by its cover, nor a person by first impressions.

I have no criticism of Billy Gray's performance in the central role. He was one of the least self-conscious of all the child actors who came along at this time--and probably reached his peak as Doris Day's bratty little brother in BY THE LIGHT OF THE SILVERY MOON and ON MOONLIGHT BAY.

SWORD OF VENUS (Harold Daniels, 1953) **

This is easily the most obscure – judging also by the poor quality of the print obtained – offshoot of the Alexandre Dumas perennial "The Count Of Monte Cristo" with, unsurprisingly, a totally meaningless title and a cheapjack production (by the ubiquitous writer/producer team of Jack Pollexfen and Aubrey Wisberg) into the bargain! Ironically, out of the five films related to the tale I have watched in the last few days, it is the only one in which that character has made a personal appearance – but, given, his embarrassingly doddering state here (inaudibly egging a coachman on to hasten the journey towards the scene of a duel between his philandering son - which had already provoked a catfight in a tawdry nightspot - and slighted best friend, yet fainting as soon as he is on his feet from all the excitement…not to mention eventually expiring from a mere broken heart over his heir's apparent ingratitude!) really does him no credit!!

Incidentally, rather than appropriating the famed treasure for themselves, the trio of villains – two of them off-springs of Edmond Dantes' old enemies and the sole survivor, Dan O'Herlihy's wily Danglars – they determine to have the son convicted of a staged murder (one would think a change of tactic was in order so as not to immediately give themselves away…yet The Son Of Monte Cristo himself seems blissfully unaware of their identity here!?), while obtaining his signature in prison, so that his estate can then be sold off to third parties and rendering the old man's legacy obsolete!! The plot does get inordinately complex for this type of fare: characters not only repeatedly feign to be someone else, but even take turns hiding under bandages (one of the biggest laughs here has the man posing as the hero being first pierced through with a spear then literally climbing over a balcony to exacerbate the drama of his demise with a fall!).

While protagonist Robert Clarke leaves much to be desired (naturally, the female member of his antagonistic trio becomes thoroughly besotted by his charms and has a change of heart – but whose final clinch is bafflingly interrupted by a toast being given in another room of the Monte Cristo location by utterly peripheral figures!), the 73-minute film is watchable for the participation of William Schallert as a drunken solicitor (also in cahoots with Danglars et al) and particularly O'Herlihy – clearly playing a man older than his real age, yet looking far sprightlier than the Count himself! – who lends his usual gravitas to the often silly and all-too-familiar proceedings (he also has a way with words, nonchalantly instructing a loutish innkeeper memorizing his deceitful speech to the young Dantes not to "vomit" the words!). In conclusion, I have three further adaptations of the original source to go through (from 1922 with John Gilbert, the renowned 1929 3-part French Silent version, and an 8-hour 1966 Italian TV mini-series), may be able to get my hands on one more (also French but dating from 1961, with Louis Jourdan) as well as yet another Pollexfen/Wisberg spin-off (the 1949 noir THE TREASURE OF MONTE CRISTO)…!

This early Cacoyannis "Carmen" seethes with energy.

Still today, absorbing viewing, this Bazouki melodrama has many of the faults, features and personnel of the Greek home consumption cinema of the fifties but scenes like Alexandrakis' tilted stagger along the white street while his sex-bomb old flame is making out with the football hero or the country picnic with the child dancing along with Vembo's song, generate attention rarely matched there.

The business of Mercouri's first number proving a fiasco creating suspense about whether she actually can deliver is, of course, the device used in 8 MILE.

The film making is a bit rough. This one is not shot by English cameraman Walter Lassally who did most of Cacoyannis' work and some of it looks like it was lit with a searchlight. However the people who will make an impression are already visible - Hadjidakis, Aldredge, Cacoyanis and it's leads, the vibrant Mercouri and virile Foundas who would figure in all the director's early work and should have had as substantial a career as any of them.

French Neo-Realism

Considering Neo-Realism was really invented by a French writer-director, Marcel Pagnol (who also invented "poetic realism" in the process), this is its natural legacy. It could have been called "Adultery - French Provincial Style". It is remarkable for many reasons, not the least of which is Fernandel's dramatic turn as a two-timing husband giving in to temptation with a kind of childish, innocent glee and Françoise Arnoul's affirmation as a typically French sex symbol representing everything "wrong" with the new generation. It is realistic in that it doesn't over-dramatize the sexual aspects but delves rather seriously in the social and psychological consequences of adultery. It is also shot on location in Arles. The production values, direction, music (by Paul "Mademoiselle de Paris" Durand) and acting (including a good part for Sylvie) are beyond compare. Highly recommended and worth more than all the New Wave films combined...

Doesn`t Live Up To Its Potential

Victor Mature plays Lt Sam Pryor an American officer of Greek descent who is given the task of leading a platoon of Greek soldiers during the Korean war

This had the potential to be a fairly good war film dealing with profound subjects like cowardice , ethnicity and identity . Unfortunately somewhere along the line something went wrong but I`m not entirely sure what . I guess all the ingrediants are there for a deeply scathing anti- war film but since THE GLORY BRIGADE has a fairly short running time it`s probably been produced by the studio as a B movie to be put on before the main feature which is a pity since it had a lot of potential , but I guess it deserves some credit for pointing out that the Americans didn`t fight the Korean war single handed

The Dirty Five.

Five Guns West is directed by Roger Corman and written by R. Wright Campbell. It stars John Lund, Dorothy Malone, Mike Connors and Jonathan Haze. Filmed in Pathecolor with cinematography by Floyd Crosby and music by Buddy Bregman.

Desperate for men during the last days of the war between the States, the South found it necessary to offer pardons to outlaws to carry out special assignments. Strange dark figures rode under the flag of the Confederacy.

Well the central idea of the story formed the basis of better films to come further down the pipe, but outside of Malone's perky performance, there's not a great deal to sing about here. Corman was a master of the cheap production and he does well to keep this from total damnation, but excitement is rare, there's a lot of wood propping up the acting and the predictability of it all renders the finale a damp squib.

Its worth in the history of independent American cinema is at least notable, and once the film reaches the stagecoach station and Malone enters the fray; thus the ruffians have something to get in a pickle about, the pic just about holds interest. But come the end you realise it's the sort of Western that achieves the minimum it can to get released and is quite simply the first rung of the ladder for one Roger Corman. 4/10

a very rare,hard to find,nostalgic ,light hearted,science fiction comedy/drama from a gone era

this rare hard to find film should appeal to those science fiction collectors that like a nostalgic typical "greed verses good" message, the cast should be very impressive to veteran fans of 1950"s classic science fiction,check out those names folks!, modern present day corrupt politicians would not approve of this film,the stereotypes are in our newspapers and on television everyday at the present time,****my favorite line from the film is when the orphan boy asks the judge, "what is a birthday card?",**** i sincerely hope someday the distributors will release a quality print of this almost forgotten film, but my gut feeling is that will not happen due to current marketing practices. in my humble opinion,this is an interesting study of a 1954 moralistic science fiction comedy/drama very similar to some episodes of the latter excellent twilight zone television series.

The Snow-maiden, daughter of king winter and the spring fairy, is aloud to live in a human village. Her heart can't inflame in love. She would melt if it did.

A animated version of the Rimski Korsakov opera. For the opera lover is especially the palace in the animation interesting it based on the original stage design. The voices & music is one of the most delicate versions I know. In the early fifties in which it was recorded the understanding of the opera was much more suiting the romantic/esoteric character of the opera, then todays practice.

As an opera it isn't much played.

For the ones not familiar to opera it's a nice introduction. Following the fairytale of the snow-maiden, the story it's more interesting and richer of content then the average opera. Rimsky Korsav's and his libretto writer made a few changes to the fairytale that brought the esoteric content of the opera much more to the surface.

The animation, in a beautiful early 50's Russian fairytale style, in the one hand keeps the static style of the opera intact, while on the other hand much more focusing on the story the opera is bases on, and telling it as a fairytale should be told, while it's dynamic is still the dynamic of the opera. It's not degraded into a Disney comedy animation, killing the deeper layers of the story.

That at the time it was made the ideology of social realism was (often)leading in animation, so a lot of "rotoscoping" is used, helped to keep it a very dignified adaptation of the opera. While at the same time keeping the dialog spoken, and cutting some elements of the first act make it much more accessible. Although I think the role of Kupava and the role of Lel and perhaps the parents get a bit cut too much. I understand it's a director's choice where to cut to keep the animation around 1 hour long, but I would have left more of the 1st act intact.

The version of the animation in circulation, by the way, has a very abrupt cut in Lel's first aria in the first act. a part of the aria is missing, in a way that makes you think there is a piece of film missing there too.

All in all there is a good balance between respect for the basic material and adapting it to an animation idiom.

They wind up in Namou, a Vichy French island, and are quartered in a run-down hotel. White refuses to join and says he is deserting and intends to remain on the island ...

High jinx in the Pacific.

Sergeant James O'Hearn is standing on trial for a number of serious misdemeanours, refusing to testify or even state his defence, the outlook is very bleak. Much against his wishes, good time girl Ginger Martin takes to the stand and the whole case against O'Hearn is going to be seen in a very different light. A tale of loves, friendships, rivalry's, bad luck, but most of all, heroism in the line of duty.

The genre police have tagged this picture as an action/comedy/romance set just prior to the Pacific hostilities in WWII. That it's a multi genre piece is a given, that it's also an odd bit of cinema is also very much understandable. That's the only real complaint with South Sea Woman, it's so jaunty and full of fun that when we get to the wonderful, bold and tough last quarter, you are not exactly sure how to feel. It's like entering a fancy dress party and winning first prize but then suddenly being told the prize is for worst costume of the night!

Anyway, the cast seem to be having a right laugh with it, Burt Lancaster (0'Hearn) and Chuck Connors (Davey White) are constantly at loggerheads about their participation in the conflict, and the direction they should be taking (humouressly so), because right in between them is Virginia Mayo (Ginger), sparklingly pretty she's all set to marry White, but O'Hearn is doing his hardest to ensure that that doesn't happen. This is the mainstay of the film, we (they) lurch from one fight to another, from one daft encounter to the next, bad luck and sheer bravado constantly zipping around with our protagonists, and then the shift to full blown drama. It ties up all the loose ends, and it in no way is a cop out ending, in fact far from it, but it does take some getting used to and even some time after the credits have rolled I personally was a bit bemused.

It's a recommended film, if only for the sparky cast it is worth it, but just go into it expecting a whisk in the blender and you will be OK. 6/10

Curtis and Borgnine do well enough with very familiar material

This movie's plot was all-too-familiar even in 1955. It is basically a reworking of Golden Boy with a bit of Body And Soul and two or three others mixed in. Some of the dialog is similarly recycled, but there are a few intriguing new lines providing some food for thought. Mostly though, if you are a fan of boxing movies, the two lead performances and the brisk pacing makes this one worth passing time with. Tony Curtis wouldn't have been my first choice for the lead in a boxing movie, but he brings surprising grit and ambition to the role. Borgnine is dead-on perfect as the tough-but...make that just plain tough manager who has to overcome his disappointment for the flaws in Curtis' character to take him back under his wing. John Marley is a standout as a referee vulnerable to intimidation.

Kids On Their Own In The Woods

The Desperate Search that Howard Keel is on is for his children whom he has custody of for six weeks every summer as per the court agreement with ex-wife Patricia Medina. The two kids, Lee Aaker and Linda Lowell, survive a plane crash in the Canadian wilderness and are on their own in the woods.

As was the custom in those bygone days of the big studios you had someone under contract you kept them working. In Keel's case they had no big musical property for him at the moment so he was put into this B film which could have used color to accentuate the nice rural settings the film was shot in.

Desperate Search had the action alternate between the kids and their struggle to survive and the search and rescue operation which Keel and Medina are both part of as they are both pilots. In the former young Lee Aaker stands out as he tries to keep himself and his perpetually whining and crying sister safe and moving from the wreck to where he thinks dad might be searching. Through most their scenes the two children are playing tag with a hungry mountain lion and the most frightening scene in the film is little Linda Lowell wading into a river to escape the mountain lion.

Medina is a competitive sort by nature and her competitiveness carried over into the marriage which caused the breakup. Keel's second wife is supportive Jane Greer who is not a pilot and she and Medina almost get to scrapping the way Alexis and Crystal used to on Dynasty.

Desperate Search moves at a nice pace and the cinematography and editing is really first rate. A few more production values and this could have been an A feature.

At a desert inn, Cully's outlaw gang meet former associate Simon Bhumer, now planning to retire on a farm with his wild, luscious daughter Lolly. On a stormy night, Cully and Lolly almost have an affair, broken up by Simon who still has a fast draw. But later, as the gang heads for the border after a bank robbery, they encounter the Bhumers and a band of renegade Apaches. It's soon a question of who is pursuing whom.

good unpredictable story, torrid love scenes, neglected western

What made me see this film was an article I read about "the woman in the western", by Blake Lucas in the book "The Western Reader", where it is one of the films mentioned. Colleen Miller is a girl who is going to town with her father Walter Brennan and on the way meets outlaw Rory Calhoun, who is planning a bank robbery with three other members of the gang. Colleen is a very sensual girl and in no time she and Calhoun are having some of the most erotic scenes that I have ever seen on a movie. The story, by Louis L'Amour is good and unpredictable and it shows through Nina Foch and Colleen how a woman can be important in trying to stop a deadly fight between their men. The only criticism I have is about an Indian attack where stock shots seem to be used which do not blend so well. This is a totally neglected film which deserves to be seen.

Middling Circus Pic Saved by Sean McClory

Although William A. Wellman took over the direction about halfway through, Ring of Fear (1954) offers middling entertainment at best. It's a "Hand me another shot of the same crowd" movie in which the premier pleasures are Sean McClory's charismatic performance as the maniacal ringmaster, and the circus acts themselves. But although these latter acts would seem a natural for CinemaScope, they are not as prominently featured as we would wish. We do see a lot of hardboiled crime writer Mickey Spillane though, and even more of Clyde Beatty, who is not slow to advertise himself. In the credits and the first few minutes of the film, his name is prominently displayed 28 times. Despite Beatty's fearless big cat taming, he is out-acted by less grand-standing members of the troupe, particularly Emmett Lynn and Pat O'Brien. Marian Carr makes a delectable heroine.

A tryout for Tony Curtis blotted out from memory

Douglas Sirk's reputation lies solely on his expertise within the melodrama genre. But as a director under contract he was afforded the opportunity of directing a wide range of movie genres. His success with these (which included a western, a sword and sandal saga and light musical comedies) was notably unremarkable. They remain watchable, but mainly of interest not for their intrinsic qualities but rather as stepping stones toward Sirk's major contribution to the movies.

In his later years Sirk gave an in depth interview to Jon Halliday which was then turned into the book "Sirk on Sirk". In it he discusses in some detail his works from his pre-Hollywood days until the untimely end of his career at the end of the fifties. While he speaks much about his acknowledged successes, he has little to say about the weaker films. "No Room for the Groom" is given but one sentence in the entire book. Sirk says, "I think I had to do it as a tryout for Tony Curtis…… I don't remember anything about it at all".

Since he remembers much about movies made long before this, one can only surmise he has blotted this one out from his memory. It's a wise move, since this is simply the worst film Sirk ever put his name to.

"No Room for the Groom" is a screwball comedy, something Sirk was woefully unequipped for. But its doubtful that even a master of the genre could have pulled it off since the dialog is to put it bluntly, atrocious.

The situations which are intended to be humorous are downright irritating. A young Tony Curtis desperate to prove himself in the "tryout", acquits himself valiantly. But its truly a terrible mess of a movie.

Other than for Sirk completests, this is one to steer clear of.
