Overly ambitious, but enjoyable

In the mid-1950s (as the British film industry was going through yet another crisis), independent producer David Angel turned out a series of modest but extremely intelligent films, of which the best are this one, "The Sea Shall Not Have Them" (with Michael Redgrave), "Cast a Dark Shadow" (with Dirk Bogarde), and "Carve Her Name With Pride" (with the underrated Virginia McKenna). These films boasted top-notch scripts and actors, but were hampered somewhat by their production values.

In the case of "Escapade," we have a fine cast and plot: John Mills plays a professional pacifist who can't seem to control the violence simmering within his own marriage to Yvonne Mitchell. Fearing a divorce, their sons concoct a plan to put their father's ideas into more pragmatic action; they steal a small airplane, which they plan to fly to Vienna in a calculated stunt that will bring attention to their own pacifist values and that will bring their family closer together. All of this causes much consternation for their school's headmaster, the great Alastair Sim.

In my opinion, Sim makes this movie. So fantastic was his comic timing that he steals every scene he's in -- even from the usually reliable John Mills. Two of Mills' sons are played by Andrew Ray (of "The Mudlark") and Peter Asher (brother of the more famous actress Jane Asher). One of their schoolmates is played by Jeremy Spencer (who would go on to appear in "Summertime" and "The Prince and the Showgirl"). Fans of British cinema should also keep a sharp look-out for character actor Richard Wattis who appears uncredited early on.

Such a cast makes it impossible for any movie to be bad, and indeed, "Escapade" is about 3/4 of a really good movie. Everything is fine while director Philip Leacock keeps a light touch, portraying the ease with which the schoolboys outsmart their parents and teachers. But the final act of the film loses its sense of humor and turns a little mawkish and sentimental. Writer Donald Ogden Stewart (who had already been blacklisted in Hollywood and wrote this screenplay under the pseudonym Gilbert Holland) tries to cram too many serious statements into the last 15 minutes: we get comments on the values of the press, on the potential for world peace, on the idealism of youth and the cynicism of adults, etc. As a result, the finale takes itself too seriously. What we really need is a director like Billy Wilder at the helm -- someone who could undercut the seriousness in order to curtail the sentimentalism. Part of the problem is probably due to the origins of the story as a play, and although Stewart manages to "open" the play successfully, the central gimmick (the fact that we never see Mills' eldest son) is what keeps me from being won over by the film's finale. I just have no reason to idolize/idealize the 16-year-old maverick we never see.

But these few complaints shouldn't stop you from watching this movie. In fact, these weaknesses are admirable because they illustrate just how intelligent the movie is.

There really IS no business like show business!

"There's No Business Like Show Business" was never intended to be great film-making or storytelling, so please do not watch it with those things in mind.

Sure, it was over-staged, over-produced, in some cases over-acted and any other "overs" you can think of, but it's just fun to relax and watch and listen to. I've seen the film maybe dozens of times (I own the DVD) and it's obvious to me that despite a few on screen gaffes and off-screen problems for at least a couple of the actors, Hollywood had a whale of a good time making it. Some of the characters are unrealistic and I'm sure if you could ask the actors, all would say it was by far not their best work.

Furthermore, if we didn't know it before, "Show Business" proved that Johnnie Ray, the part crooner, part rock belter of the era, couldn't act his way into or out of a paper bag. But so what?? This ain't Hamlet. Ray was cast to do here what he did best: sing the heck out of a couple of songs that were arranged precisely to suit his performing style. And he also just managed to pull off an unusual plot twist that I'm sure audiences of the era did not expect.

We're all asked to suspend temporarily all logic and reason when we turn on our TVs or go to the movies. Why stop with "There's No Business Like Show Business"? So grab the munchies, sit back and let Ethel Merman and Gang entertain you for a couple of harmless, gaudy hours.

Memories

Saw this with a childhood friend of mine in the 50's on TV when we were 'sneaking' staying up very late. When it was done, we looked at each other, both having been touched deeply, though we couldn't have described how. Ever after, it has been one of our 'special' memories -- one of us says "remember that movie?" and the other understands perfectly! That's what movies should do! Did anyone else have that experience on first watching it? I remember being very affected by Hitchcock's Saboteur, also, after watching it late one night as a kid. It stirred the same response that later made me a 'movie fan' -- that magical sense of someone (the director) saying something to you in a way that seemed to make life 'bigger' than it had been before.

Hope Was Off Limits For Maxwell

Off Limits is a very typical Bob Hope product with Hope playing a character that he's done before, a guy who thinks he's a sharpie, but is really quite the schnook. Hope is a fight manager who finally gets himself a champion in Stanley Clements only to be done out of his end of the champ by partners, Marvin Miller and Richard Weil.

It's quite the con they pull, sending a fake draft notice to Clements and then having Hope enlist to protect their investment. Of course Clements gets rejected by the Draft Board, but Hope's in for the duration.

While there he buddies up with Mickey Rooney who was also a fighter and thinks he can be lightweight champion himself. Hope kids him along because he's got his mind on Marilyn Maxwell who is Rooney's aunt if you can believe that one. Later on Hope and Rooney get real earnest in their championship quest.

All this is done mind you while the two of them become Military Police. That's another thing I found hard to swallow in Off Limits. Still Rooney and Hope work quite well together and I'm surprised they never did another film together. All their shenanigans are watched with a jaundiced eye by the Captain of the MPs Eddie Mayehoff who probably has the best performance in the film.

Off Limits was the second of two films Bob Hope did with Marilyn Maxwell the first being the infinitely better The Lemon Drop Kid. The two of them were involved with each other at the time though that would shortly come to an end. There's a little bite in their scenes together as Maxwell was realizing Hope wasn't going to leave Dolores for her.

If you look quick you'll see Charles Bronson in a brief appearance as a fighter training in a gym in one scene. Bing Crosby makes his obligatory appearance in Hope film via a clip from Welcome Stranger.

As in The Lemon Drop Kid, Jay Livingston and Ray Evans wrote the score though nothing as memorable as Silver Bells came out Off Limits. Still it's a pleasant enough service comedy, though far from Hope's best work.

Curtis, Sterling shine in Joseph Pevney's solid boxing story

No other sport has given rise to as many superior movies as our most barbaric one, prizefighting. Joseph Pevney's Flesh and Fury may fall short of superior, but it's well above average and shows its principal actors in the most flattering light: Tony Curtis does proud in one of his first starring roles, while Jan Sterling contributes possibly her finest performance.

Curtis (in the pouty fulsomeness of his young manhood) boxes for $25 purses when he catches the eye of Sterling, a bloodthirsty and avaricious ringside habitué. The only catch is that Curtis is deaf and dumb, but that suits Sterling just swell - his disability makes him more vulnerable to her control. She pushes his career forward too fast for the liking of his manager (Wallace Ford), but Curtis seems all but unstoppable.

Enter Mona Freeman, reporter from Panorama magazine, to do a feature on the hearing-impaired welterweight. It's her kind of story; her father, a wealthy Long Island architect, was deaf, too, so she learned how to sign - a skill Curtis has let lapse as it calls attention to his shortcoming. But exposed to a world of greater possibilities, Curtis undergoes an operation that restores his hearing.

There's the inevitable canker, however. Curtis' self-assurance in the ring came in part from his obliviousness to the din of the crowd. What's more, the pretentious babble he hears at a party in Freeman's posh mansion convinces him that he has more in common with the strident Sterling than with the privileged Freeman (the William Alland/Bernard Gordon script shows a firm grasp of class frictions). He decides to return to boxing, even though his doctor has warned him that he risks losing his newly regained hearing....

Joesph Pevney remains an overlooked director. He started out as an actor (he debuted in Nocturne as the peripatetic piano player) but soon moved behind the camera, helming a number of offbeat and compulsively watchable movies in and around the noir cycle: Shakedown, Iron Man, Meet Danny Wilson, Female on the Beach, The Midnight Story. In the late '50s, he made the move to television, directing a number of classic series. Not everybody who ended up working for the small screen did so because of mediocrity; some, like Pevney, were in demand because of their solid track record - because of movies like Flesh and Fury.

Very mixed feelings here

If you are an opera fan you'll find much to like, if you're not you won't so much. As a lifelong opera enthusiast and someone who wants a career in it, Giuseppe Verdi was interesting and I'm glad I saw it. But the overall result wasn't really that mind-blowing. There are definitely a lot of things to love, the characterisations of Verdi and second wife Giuseppina are spot on, intense and affecting. The music is outstanding as well, Rigoletto, Otello, Nabucco and Il Trovatore all to name a few are a sheer treat to listen to and staged very well, the Otello death scene is incredibly powerful. As is the singing, especially with Mario De Monaco and Tito Gobbi. Del Monaco sounds absolutely thrilling and doesn't resort to the shouty quality his voice did have later on while Tito Gobbi sings with deep feeling, great word painting and he practically embodies Rigoletto especially through his voice alone. The direction does feel rather dull though, and the film while not amateurish isn't a beautiful-looking film either, rather flat instead. The story doesn't really ring true, it's interesting definitely and gets to the point well enough but gets melodramatic and only really comes to life in the opera stagings. The dialogue is also very soap-operatic in tone and while it was nice to see Donizetti, Rossini and Victor Hugo featured apart from the performances of Verdi and Giuseppina the rest fall into caricatures. In conclusion, very mixed on Giuseppe Verdi, interesting but not great. Opera fans will be in heaven, those wanting good dialogue and direction will be disappointed. 5/10 Bethany Cox

Excellent Story With Characters Who Aren't Always Who They Seem

Wow, what an impressive screen debut for a 24-year-old. That was the famous James Dean, here in his first of three starring roles before death took him at a tragically young age. Just as impressive, however, is the overall performance of the rest of the cast, including lesser-known Richard Davalos, who also was making his movie debut.

The most impressive person connected to this movie, however, was director Elia Kazan who not only excelled directing this film but - in the same year - directed "On The Waterfront." Now, that's not a bad year of work!

"East Of Eden" is billed as a modern-day story of "Cain and Abel," between good and bad brothers with one of them feeling rejected by his father. The small Biblical account of the two brothers only mentions an offering they both gave God and then saying the brother whose offering wasn't accepted went out in a fit of jealousy and killed the other.

True, the "offering" by "Cal" (Dean) and its rejection by his dad "Adam" (Raymond Massey) leads to a climactic scene near the end of the film, but - this is just an assumption - most people viewed this simply as a story between "good" and "evil" pertaining to Dean and Davalos' characters.

I didn't see either of those guys as either the "good" or "bad" brothers. In fact, this film story is unusual in that every main character's personality begins in one direction and, as the film progresses, ends in almost the opposite. Nobody is as they first seem.

"Cale Trask" is shown early on to be a totally rebellious and immature loser who commits a few stupid acts of vandalism and has a desire to be a loner. As the film goes on, we see a softhearted guy who needs and desires love and companionship like everyone else. The fact he only had one parent, and that one didn't seem to love him, has messed his mind up a great deal.

Meanwhile, his older brother "Aron" (Davalos) is pictured as the kind, dependable, levelheaded guy who has a nice sweetheart who he plans to marry very soon. "Aron" has always made his dad proud which makes Cale jealous and bitter (hence, the Cain/Abel analogy.) In the last third of the film, however, Aron's personality reveals some dark, selfish traits and he isn't so "good" anymore.

Julie Harris plays "Abra," who begins as a sweet, likable and trustworthy person but in the end proves insincere in her "ready to marry" and "I'm in love with Aron" remarks as her feelings develop for the younger brother. She does a nice job at the end, however, helping Cale reconcile with his ailing dad.

The fourth major player, the father of the two boys, is portrayed - at least by Cale - as man who has played favorites with his sons and is more of a businessman than a loving father. However, we see later that he is not a bad guy at all. He is happy to praise his younger son when merited, is quick to forgive but, like a lot of fathers in "the old days," I believe, had a hard time outwardly expressing love for his children despite, in his heart wanting the best for them.

The fifth major character in the film, "Kate," has the least amount of lines but is the most powerful figure in the movie. She's the mother who abandoned her kids when they were babies and left her husband because she "didn't want to be tied down to a ranch." Wow, Thank God our mothers didn't have that selfish attitude! She's pictured as a very hard, bitter woman who has made a success of herself and to hell with everyone else. However, once again, as the story unfolds, we see an opposite side. Cale, checking rumors she was in the area, sought her out and discovered she, indeed, was his mom. (Nobody in the Trask family knew she lived nearby, with the dad telling the kids she was dead rather than risk hurting their feelings.). Anyway, later she surprises us by softening up and loaning Cal $5,000 for a business venture to help him and help bail out his dad. That amount of money is equal to at least $100,000 today, so it's a generous, kind person who would say "okay" to that monetary request. The more she speaks, the softer she sounds, even if she wouldn't want to admit it.

The only character I wish had a bigger role was "Anne," played by Lois Smith, who was beautiful and had an intriguing role that I thought would amount to more. I'm glad to see that she is still acting on a regular basis today.

Overall, it's a solid drama with complex characters who make you reflect about them long after you view this. I don't know why it took so long for me to finally see this movie, but I was impressed. (May I recommend the two-disc, special-edition DVD?). This movie is wonderfully directed, acted and photographed. I've only seen it once (last night) and I am not in love with the film (yet), but I am surprised it only garnered one Academy Award. I think it deserved more.

Intriguing Melodrama with Action

A great picture depicting the Civil War, and the surprise attack on Saint Albans, Vermont by Confederate soldiers. You will not see many movies wherein the movie industry deviates from the "politically correct" Northern side of the War Between The States. This one takes you mostly to the Southern side. It takes place about the time of the push to Atlanta - or the indiscriminate burning of Georgia by the then estimated (and later confirmed) mentally impaired General Sherman. The lead actors Van Heflin, co-starring the young Ann Bancroft did a tremendous job. It would be a shame for Civil War history enthusiasts to miss this exciting movie.

Review :

The original is great, so is the remake

The original version of Manon des Sources directed by Marcel Pagnol tells the story of Manon, a girl living in the mountains, who decides to block the spring supplying the water to the village. Manon wants to have revenge on the inhabitants of the village that ignored her father when he was killing himself to find precious water for his own land.

This story sounds familiar to some people as being the second part of Claude Berri's 1986 remake. Not only the story is different, but the style of the original movie is too. Pagnol uses a very less dramatic way to tell that poignant story although some scenes are, like Manon confronting Ugolin and the villagers after the sermon. As in other Pagnol movies, the funny dialogs make the movie. The story of the hunchback told by Monsieur Belloiseau and the trial of Manon are elements that are absent in the remake and that are delightful here. These and the priest sermon are exceptionally entertaining. That contrast in style is certainly a reason why the remake did an excellent job compared to most.

The acting here is of superior level and especially Rellys as Ugolin. The cast of the remake had to be top-notch and again it was. The cinematography is beautiful with light effects that recreate the warmth of Provence. Again, the remake had it too by adding color.

The remake had the ingenuity of depicting the story of Jean de Florette in images and involving Le Papet much more in the story. I don't know which story is the most faithful to Pagnol's novel though.

The Pagnol movie may not be as entertaining to non-French speakers because the dialogs have a higher importance than in Berri's. I doubt that subtitles could render the feeling and I'm convinced that dubbing wouldn't. Nevertheless, it's surely a feast for the ears of a French speaker.

Still, Pagnol's Manon des Sources is amazing and Berri's remake had the intelligence to be different. It also had the approach to catch an international audience. If you liked the remake, give the original a try.

Standard issue war story

Quite how this second feature ended up with the cast it got is a puzzle. Mission to Korea is strictly bottom of the bill stuff, a standard war story directed unimaginatively by Fred F. Sears. Somehow, Fred ended up with Rex Reason, Audrey Totter, and Maureen O'Sullivan in his picture, and they all add a gloss of professionalism to this otherwise standard programmer. Perhaps producer Robert Cohn--nephew of Columbia strong man Harry Cohn--twisted his uncle's arm. At any rate, O'Sullivan still looks beautiful, Totter does her slinky ingenue thing in uniform, and Reason is solid and reliable. There's some decent aerial footage, but not much in the story department, which revolves around aviators in the Korean War.

Poisons and black masses.

Before the cast and credits ,a warning appears on the screen, insisting that the movie was made from M. De La Reynie 's archives, and another "cultural" insert comes back at the end of the movie.

History is given a rough ride though:in the movie,Mademoiselle de Fontanges is poisoned by Madame de Montespan. But now, let's see what a modern historian,Mrs Simone Bertière ,writes in her recent book"les femmes du roi soleil":the autopsy proved that the unfortunate Angélique did not need any poison to go to her grave :she had TB!Then to sweeten the screenplay,Madame de Montespan is asked to leave the court after the affair;this is untrue:although in disgrace ,she lived in Versailles for more than ten years afterward. The king could not chase her out of

his court:he would have admitted she was guilty.Opinions differ about Madame de Montespan's culpability:historian Simone Bertière does not rule out the fact that the marquise was fond of magic potions and fortune-tellers ,but she does not think she might have taken part in one of those carnivalesque black masses.

Henri Decoin 's metier was film noir. And the poisons affair was tailor made for him:it's really a film noir in costume. He gathered a perfect cast:his favorite actress,Danielle Darrieux,as Montespan,Vivianne Romance ,who played bitch parts in Duvivier's works (panique,la belle équipe),as La Voisin,Paul Meurisse (who had just made Clouzot's "les diaboliques:it was an extraordinary choice),Anne Vernon as La Desoeillets,LA Montespan's tool.He created a misty demonic atmosphere, using skillful lights.Oddly ,King Louis XIV is only a figure. Shot in color,at a time when only a few French movies were,it has a passé charm, that of yellowed photos.

Review :

An amusing cod thriller.

'Cosh Boy' has dreadful scripts and abysmal acting. The only attractive feature of the film is the pretty 18 year old actress Joan Collins (whatever became of her?). The storyline is condescending and moralistic. It suggests that manly discipline is needed to help in the rebuilding of the post-war family, otherwise working-class youths will turn into vicious, nasty 'cosh boys' or poor hapless single mothers. Crime had actually fallen after the war. Black market crime, and other offences, was rife in wartime Britain

What makes this film funny, apart from the atrocious acting, is that in hindsight we can see how ridiculous some 'moral panics' are. The people that might laugh at the caricatures in this film might still go along with existing panics in Britain today - such as 'mad cow' disease, 'road rage', chlamydia teenage alcoholism etc. The total ridiculousness of this film is clear because it is so dated. However panics still grip the popular imagination today, only that they are filtered through far more sophisticated channels such as so-called public health campaigns and the media.

Returning to the film. The characters are one-dimensional, it is purely an exercise in moral tub-thumping concerned with the reconsolidation of law and order in post-war society. The acting is so bad it is hilarious and I'm sure this is one film that Lewis Gilbert would not want to be reminded of.

50's melodrama- Swedish style.

You know the scene in all of those TV sitcoms and low-brow comedies of the 50's and 60's where one guy says something to another guy about going to see 'one of them foreign movies' wink, wink, nudge, nudge? Well, the winking and nudging probably wasn't over Gunnar Bjönstrand playing chess with death.

Screened at one of the 'Archive Nights' at this year's ImageOut: The Rochester Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, Time of Desire is the Swedish equivalent of something like A Summer Place- sex, a little comedy, and a lot of melodrama. The story concerns two sisters who live an idyllic life in the countryside, riding horses and frolicking in the forest. They're close. Very close. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge. Their relationship is disrupted when the younger sister falls in love with a man who arrives in their village on business, leaving the older sister emotionally distraught. Comic relief is provided by the lusty escapades of the girls' widowed father and the various household servants.

Content-wise, the film isn't as far removed from American melodramas of the time as one might think: Troy Donohue, Sandra Dee and Lana Turner were starring in stories almost as racy in Hollywood. The movie is slower than its American cousins- in general, European films of the period had lots of footage of peasants frolicking in the countryside, demonstrating how happy and free they were. Lesbian incest aside, the movie does have a distinctively European attitude towards sex (or at least what Americans in 1954 thought of as a 'distinctly European attitude'), presenting it as something that is both good and fun. And the film does have a genuinely startling third act twist- in the 1950's, there were two options for gay characters on film- either repent and go straight, or commit suicide; this film happily (or creepily, depending on how literally you take the story) finds a third option.

Time of Desire had its U.S. premiere in 1958, and reportedly received fairly good reviews. It then disappeared for nearly 5 decades, before a festival programmer tracked down the last existing complete print in a European archive. This sort of find is always exciting and worthy of celebration- however, while I heartily maintain all films are worthy of preservation, not all films are worthy of veneration; and just because something is Swedish, black and white, and hasn't been seen in 50 years doesn't mean it's a work of art. Time of Desire is an interesting curio, but it's asking too much of its serviceable plot and production to be a great cinematic discovery. Originally released with the tag line 'The Film that Shocked Three Continents!', 50 years later it can best be described as 'mildly titillating three continents, before gently lulling them to sleep.'

American Madeline, a no-better-than-she-has-to-be (and then only when pushed) traveler arrives in Naples. She has an eye for men and a penchant for getting by on her wits---a 1954 term for body---and soon has a well-meaning (dumb) young composer, Ciccio providing her with room and board. But she has a male counterpart in Ciccio's friend, café-singer Nino, who recognizes her for what she is and he decides to intercede on behalf of his friend. Black Widow Madeline welcomes him into her parlor, in a manner of speaking to get past the censors, and the next thing Nino knows, he has abandoned his wedding plans with sweet-young-thing Lisa, and runs off with Madeline. Lisa and Ciccio are left with wringing hands, and Madeline and Nino become an American/Italian version of the "Battling Bickersons" or "The Honeymooners", with none of the fun.

Rare and rather endearing Turner vehicle

Out of circulation for many years, this was the third and final of three films produced by Joe Pasternak for MGM under the auspices of Dore Schary intended to rescue the faltering career of the studios 40's glamour queen, Lana Turner. Intended as a facsimile of the type of European sex flicks glutting the stateside market and showcasing budding starlets like Loren and Mangano, and with Richard Brooks at the directorial helm for 'realistic' import and Technicolor shots of teaming Naples street scenes and interiors filmed in Londons Elstree Studios, the film ultimately failed in its attempt to engage critics, or, more importantly, the mass audience. It hardly looks any better today, though the musical score is pretty, and brunette Turners is playful and game as a Neapolitan trollop, while Carlos Thomson is wooden and ill fated Pier Angeli is simpering. This was an uncertain period in Turners sprawling, fifty year Star Career, and Schary was a notorious mishandler of MGM's contract stable. It's unusual to see Lana in this milieu and she's rather out of her element, though she gave interviews at the time which suggested she was enthusiastic about the change of pace, and considered the assignment "one of the rare opportunities where I get a chance to really act!" There is a nice extended opening credit sequence with tramp Turner trawling the busy slums, indeed one of Lana's classic 'walk' scenes in movies, but the action quickly becomes talky and set bound, confined to dingy apartments and cluttered nightclubs, occasionally springing to life when it returns to the brilliant outdoors and a dazzling beach scene. Not as bad though, as one might expect, and a lost treat for Turner compleatists.

Kossman get's his daughter Gaby, played by Germaine Dumar, to spy on the place who works as a secretary of the U.M.O. as well. She spy's on all three men each time they give her a gas attendant doll. But all of a sudden she's falling in love with them. they all think that she's just working at that company and not the president's daughter. Earlier she shows the report to her father and DR Calmus stating not to buy the station since she's sympathetic with them. But Dr Calmus decides to buy them out. Before that peter and Robert thumb ride to the night club where they suppose to meet Gaby.Peter get's a ride but Robert ends up going back home and taking the mini car to the club. Fritz has to stay and attend the gas station until some truck driver tells him about a new road being open and all the property being bought to make this road. A story is made up that she is engaged to Dr Calmus to see how they would react to prove who really loves Gaby. All of them show no sign so they leave and she's disappointed in tears. The next day the assistant to DR. Calmus goes to the gas station with papers of take over. This angers the three men . After that Irene shows up to try to tell them what happen. They are angry with her and they show her the take over papers she's angry to because Kossmann had no intention to take over so she call up Kossman about this . Kossman then calls DR Calmus about this too and tells him to forget this.Later Kossmann and Gaby show up with champaign to try to explain what was going on . Once it's reveal to the men that Gaby was his daughter this outrages Fritz more then ever cause he's in love with her then the other. The music numbers are excellent. The party scene leads to a dance number, as peter and Fritz's and Robert are playing a boogie

tune on three pianos on a truck. Wait a minute , Bepop was popular by that time and that year bill Hailey and the comments would squash jazz with rock n roll. Well a dance number with the truck divers and some private school girls and a teachers. A light song and dance number Between Peter and Gaby around the gas station. A dream sequence dance, as Robert is taking a nap in a hammock. in which he's servicing women riding scooter, with gas . another dream sequence in which Gaby is dancing with all three men. The night club scene a German version of the Modernaires singing trio "The Cornell trio" singing two numbers this is an excellent musical and worth owning for fans of classic musical if you got a multi regional player in the U.S A.

masterpiece

It is not easy to find a movie like this, that makes you laugh and think at the same time. It is like a trip not to Italy, but to the most precious souls and minds of the people of Naples, the real "gold" of this city. A forgotten masterpiece, with exceptional performances by Toto', Sofia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni.
