Crown City, Colorado, may become a ghost town; the only gold left is in Ute Indian land. Gary Brannon, an honest man who hates Indians, joins a mission to try for mining concessions; but crooked Frank Walker, more realistically, plans to start an Indian war. Gary and his wiser father Sam have their hands full keeping the peace, and Walker has lots more schemes up his sleeve. More plot twists than the average Western.

Review :

Audie Murphy helps the Ute Indians in solid little western

Among the two dozen or so westerns Audie Murphy made for Universal Pictures from 1950-1966, DRUMS ACROSS THE RIVER (1954) is one of the better ones, featuring a gold miners-vs.-Indians plot with Audie caught firmly in the middle. It's fast-paced, full of action, and features a host of lively character actors, including some great villains.

Audie plays a wagon freighter in a Colorado mining town who is, initially, a witting pawn in a plot by a group of Denver mine bosses to stir up trouble with the local Ute Indians in order to get gold concessions on their land. Audie's dad, Sam (Walter Brennan), is a friend of the Indians and, following a shootout with the Utes in which Sam is wounded, Audie meets with the Ute chief (Morris Ankrum) and his son Taos (Jay Silverheels) and negotiates a temporary peace. Unfortunately, the hired guns working for the mine bosses continue to stir things up and force Audie to aid in a stage robbery by abducting his dad and threatening to kill him. When Audie is charged with murder after the robbery, he has to keep quiet to insure Sam's safety. In the final stretch of the movie, Audie has to break free, save his dad, subdue the bad guys, clear himself and avert a battle between Indians and cavalry. The whole story is told in 78 compact minutes.

Unassuming war hero-turned-western star Murphy was at his best in parts like this, playing an ordinary westerner caught up in a tumultuous situation and having to fight his way out and summon up the moral courage to do the right thing. He always looked best when he faced down truly formidable bad guys and here he faces one of the best western villains of the 1950s. Lyle Bettger, who had one of the most sinister smiles in movie history, specialized in corrupt western capitalists (ranchers, miners, saloon owners, railroad men) who could be utterly smooth and charming one minute and murderously evil the next. Here he's the miners' lead troublemaker and is joined by a great rogues' gallery made up of future TV star Hugh O'Brian as the black-clad Morgan, who also smiles a lot, and a quartet of thugs played by frequent heavies James Anderson, George Wallace, Lane Bradford and former B-western star Bob Steele. In addition, there's Mara Corday as a voluptuous (and very attractive) saloon girl who does some of Bettger's dirty work.

Walter Brennan is very good in a rare turn as an upright authority figure and father. Jay Silverheels plays a sympathetic Indian and leads a band of Utes who appear to be played predominantly by actual Indians rather than the usual painted-up white extras. The Technicolor film was shot partly on the Universal backlot with some fine location work at key California western sites, including one dramatic desert spot representing the Indians' sacred burial ground. This was director Nathan Juran's third film with Murphy.

Another excellent film by Gordon Douglas

Once again Gordon Douglas deals with characters faced with moral dilemmas. In this case the three sisters and their infatuation with Gig Young, Doris Day's commitment to Frank Sinatra, and Sinatra's decision. From the opening scene of the neighborhood in which they live to the very end this movie is much more then it seems. Within the artificial look of the sets, there's no hiding the many themes that meander throughout this somewhat dark (musical?). For those who don't get it, take another look. These characters are far deeper then the picture perfect world they live in might make you believe.

Calamity Candy

In sunny Miami, superstitions showgirl Doris Day (as Candy Williams) and her musical troupe find themselves destitute after their show "Parisian Pretties" closes. This is strange, because Ms. Day and performing manager Phil Silvers (as Hap Schneider) appear captivating on stage. The troupe is forced to take menial jobs. While working as a maid, tap-dancing Nancy Walker (as Flo Neely) meets famous songwriter Bob Cummings (as Dick Carson) and learns he is producing a new Broadway show...

Day hopes Mr. Cummings could provide her with a lucky break. Perhaps romance will follow. "Lucky Me" was meant to be a follow-up to the crowd-pleasing "Calamity Jane" (1953), but fell short. The earlier film featured Day's million-selling #1 "Secret Love" single. This film's song highlight is "I Speak to the Stars", a sleepy #16 hit. The closing party is mildly interesting, beginning with Day in a convincing disguise. This is where you can spot black-haired Angie Dickinson, in her big screen debut.

Another great duMaurier novel transported to the screen

Like its predecessor, "Rebecca", this Daphne duMaurier story made it to the screen relatively untinkered with. The screenplay is quite faithful to the novel, and although Richard Burton seems to be chewing the scenery rather fiercely at times, it was after all an early performance of his. deHavilland displays a serene face that may (or may not!) have something dreadful to hide, much as her character in "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte". Try it, you'll like it!

Beautifully bleak and sweetly viscous.

Beautifully bleak and sweetly viscous, this tale of looming doom set near an atomic bomb test site touches the exposed nerves of the early 50's paranoia and fear. A kind of twisted take on Hitchcock's "Lifeboat" the desparate characters are placed in a desert ghost town with the explosive clock ticking. There is a charged atmosphere and undertow of sadistic sexuality that hangs about many of the scenes.

Review :

1950's Cold War Paranoia

The movie starts out with a real cool jazzy score like something you would expect from a movie like "The Gene Krupa Story. The opening scene has Kotty, Terry Moore, lying on the beach getting sun and surf until Slob, Lee Marvin, who notices her from a distance starts getting fresh with her and ends up getting a couple of seashells thrown at him.

You don't really know what the movie is about until the professor, Frank Lovejoy, comes on the scene and from him talking to Knotty you realize that he's working at a top secret government facility just up the road from the diner where Knotty and Slob work.

The movie goes along it's somewhat comical pace with Slob acting like Ed Norton in "the Honeymooners" messing up everything that he does as a cook at the diner until we see the person delivering fish and Slob start whispering with him out of earshot of the diners owner George, Keenan Wynn, and then the fisherman slips Slob something . Later Slob all by himself in his room begins to take on a new look, not kooky and funny but dead serious, as we see him take what the fisherman gave him and put it into a viewfinder. Slob sees some kind of mathematical formula and it's then when you realize that this is a story about espionage.

Not really as corny and obnoxious as most movies about the Communist threat against America was back then in the 1950's with Lee Marvin stealing every scene that he's in as the greasy cook turned top Soviet spy and being very convincing at it.

Frank Lovejoy in a role very similar to his previous Communist fighting movie "I was a Communist for the FBI" is also very convincing as a man torn between the truth and a lie by trying to infiltrate the Communist spy ring led by Slob. Where at the same time not being able to tell his girlfriend, Knotty, who thinks that he's a spy for the Soviets, without blowing his cover. Terry Moore was very good as a naive girl who learned a lot during the movie about who to trust and who not to. Like in the espionage business all that you see is not what you think.

All and all a much better movie about espionage during the cold war then most movies about the subject were back them with a great performance by Lee Marvin, one of his best. "Shack out at 101" sadly showed that in those troubled times the paranoia that griped the USA was so extreme that you couldn't trust anyone when it came to being a Communist spy. Even the cook serving you coffee and apple pie at your neighborhood diner.

FRINE, CORTIGIANA D' ORIENTE (Mario Bonnard, 1953) **1/2

I had never heard of this one when it was announced for a late-night screening on Italian TV and, frankly, I only opted to watch it in view of director Bonnard’s involvement – since he later made THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (1959), starring Steve Reeves and co-directed by Sergio Leone.

However, it turned out to be quite a pleasant surprise, if not exactly a hidden gem. Incidentally, being a black-and-white production, it emerges as one of the last efforts to be made during Italy’s second – and, in a way, most interesting – phase of epic film-making, which is highlighted by such artistic triumphs as THE IRON CROWN (1941) and FABIOLA (1949). I say “most interesting” because, from what little I’ve seen, these films were decidedly pictorially stylish rather than merely ‘spectacular’. FRINE itself, in fact, is both literate and atmospheric…but also rather sexy (with a handful of unexpected scenes of fleeting nudity), which is an element that got considerably downplayed in later juvenile, low-brow and generally glum outings!

The narrative involves an aristocratic girl (the statuesque Elena Kleus) whose influential senator father opposes the current ruling tyrant – so, the latter frames him for the theft of a precious sacred jewel and has both the old man and his wife burned at the stake and their property confiscated, while the daughter is sold into slavery. Ironically, the one to buy her (unbeknownst to the girl) is the very man who had insinuated himself in her house as a beggar and planted the incriminating jewels; however, he’s not one to let an opportunity for profit go by and quickly sees the heroine (renamed Phryne, an appellation she picked up off of an Athenian prostitute thus marked) rise to the top of the ranks as a courtesan – swaying all the men in sight, who are willing to part with a considerable chunk of their wealth for her favors!

However, she has a hidden agenda: determined to right past wrongs, especially after her native Thebes is eroded by Alexander The Great, she not only uses the money to help her destitute people but also harbors ambitions to rebuild the city as a means of regaining her own stature. The Athenian council refuses such an offer and puts her on trial for self-aggrandisement; an orator (Pierre Cressoy), Phryne’s true love who had previously suffocated his jealousy in alcohol, regains his wits enough to assume her defense – while the guilt of her reptilian pimp (Giulio Donnini) is eventually exposed by the latter’s own deaf-mute but imposing black servant (John Kitzmiller). Tamara Lees also appears as the ‘deposed’ No. 1 courtesan – who even gets snubbed for the model of Aphrodite being sculpted by her own lover!

While perhaps only middling as drama, as I said, the film retains interest even today as an example of a genre in transition.

Not a complete artistic failure, but disappointing in one way I didn't expect

Stanley Kubrick, a director who I hold in the highest of esteems for his masterpieces (Clockwork Orange, 2001, The Killing, the Shining, Dr. Strangelove, etc) took the film out of circulation, leaving it to be found by only the hardcore fans and completists. After seeing the film for myself, I could see why. At the age of 24, Kubrick had already honed his craft of still photography for LOOK magazine, and had done a few short documentaries. Like many first-time filmmakers that came in the decades after him, his ambition for Fear and Desire was, in short, to just go and make a film, cheaply, more than likely to see if he could do it. On that level, he was successful. However, the film itself definitely is not.

I can't really say that the film is a failure because there was something I did like about it throughout. Even as the film's story went on the wayside, and the actors (whom Kubrick didn't have any idea how to direct, not being a man of the theater), his knack for producing and capturing some great images gets its seeds in this film. At times, there are some shots of close-ups and quick-shots in suspense/action scenes that are eye-catching. Unfortunately, this is all the good I can really say of the film. Although there are a couple of 'name' actors in the film (Frank Slivera, who also appeared in Killer's Kiss, and Paul Mazursky, a director in his own right), the performances overall are dull and very routine.

In fact, that is the film's main demise for me; whenever I watch any Kubrick film, even his early film noirs Killer's Kiss and the Killing, I can tell who made it, as his style by then became distinct, which would continue as he evolved as an artist. It wasn't 'artsy' like I might have pictured (which is usually the case with first-time directors like Scorsese and Spielberg), but watching this film not only did it feel like it wasn't Kubrick, it felt like a lot of the time I was watching some B (or even C) grade movie by a director that time forgot- not quite 'Ed Wood' bad, but close. The music is as standard as can be, the fades are pedestrian, and the plot seems to not really hold that much attention.

In short, as others have said and which I can agree, this is a "doodle pad" of a future ground-breaker, who shows some shots and a few edits that grab some attention (the best scene overall being when the soldiers take the dumb girl hostage), but not enough to really recommend except to those, like myself, who end up seeing everything by Kubrick (or, perhaps, have to see every ultra-low budget war film ever made), if only out of curiosity.

Little old ladies gossip and argue..

A new cottage is being built in the town, and there is a "competition" to see who gets to live in it - the owners have stated it will be given to "the married couple with the most number of grandchildren", so that the cottage can be passed down through the family, as if an heir loom. This leads to frantic tallying of the number of grandchildren everyone has and a lot of sniping done by various little old ladies whilst their husbands look pained at the fuss.

A very oddball little film (little, it's only just over an hour in run time); that is anything but predictable! A few births, deaths, and marriages ensue that you'll have no idea who is going to get the cottage, until the moment the key is handed out. Overall, I'd give it about a 6 or 7 out of 10. At least if you don't like it, you don't have to sit through much before it's over!

A solid adventure yarn.

First, don't confound it with the Tod Browning feature, a silent one, starring the great Lon Chaney. This movie is British and directed by the interesting Harry Watt, who gave us this kind of exotic features, and in a semi documentary style. See for instance, WHERE NO VULTURES FLY, or SIEGE OF PICHGUT. Of course British movie industry was very used to adventures stories, and this till the early sixties. We can analyze that as a sort of reflection of the colonialist history of United Kingdom. That's what I think. And after the fifties we saw the birth of the "Kitchen Sink" way of filming, with such directors as Tony Richardson, Bryan Forbes, Lindsay Anderson and Karel Reisz. The DNA of other film makers like Ken Loach,; the digging into the major social problems of the usual population. But that's another comment. This was not for the same kind of audience.

Back to this film, it is a very good time waster for those who like old fashion movies that we saw in childhood. We can think of KING SOLOMON'S MINES. Ivory hunters who have to fight against natives tribes. Nothing special but worth watching.

Vera Ralston is wonderful in all her films. She adds character and a radiance to all her parts. Her accent is delightful. Charles Reichenthal, who left a previous comment criticizing Vera Ralston should be ashamed of himself. I was always taught that, "if you have nothing good to say about a person, don't say anything at all." There is nothing better than the old movies. Today's actors don't know the meaning of the word. Vera Ralston and all the others were wonderful in the movie and it's a movie well worth your time. I suppose "Charles" would say the same about Oscar winner Norma Shearer since she had Irving Thalberg.

Beautiful, engrossing drama

Anyone who does not think that John Huston has a broad range as a film-maker needs to watch this and "The Dead." While he spent much of his career making gritty adventure-dramas like "The Maltese Falcon," "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," and "The Man who Would be King," he also took the time to create well-crafted pieces like "Moulin Rouge."

Jose Ferrer has an astounding, almost unbelievable, performance as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, a painter from late-1800's Paris who was crippled in his childhood by a horse that ran over his legs. He now spends his days in the raunchy restaurant/dance hall populated by artists, dancers, drunks, and vagrants, sketching away at posters and portraits. Ferrer brings out Henri completely, depicting him as a man who tried to run from his problems using his art and his alcohol.

The film itself has a tenancy to be a little too flashy and gaudy at moments, but Huston manages to keep most of it grounded in the dramatics of the characters. Collete Marchand is also very noteworthy for her performance as a prostitute that befriends Henri. Marcel Vertes' production and costume design won well-deserved Oscars.

A genuinely moving film, a work of art in its own right.

Engrossing soap opera but superficial...

Despite the above cited drawback, this Edna Ferber story of a mother's love with that stifling title, SO BIG, seems aimed at the tear ducts to give JANE WYMAN another chance to show how well she can age from young woman to maturity to old age with a nice array of expressions and changes of hairdo and make-up.

She's really the best thing about SO BIG. It's story is a simple, even trite saga of a woman who wants all the best things for her son, especially since she has to rear him single-handedly once her husband (farmer STERLING HAYDEN) dies. Hayden gives such a persuasive performance that once he's gone, the picture suffers from his untimely death and the remaining scenes never achieve the same intensity of the earlier ones. Brief performances from dependable players like NANCY OLSON, MARTHA HYER and a very young RICHARD BEYMER help sustain interest in the long-winded plot.

There is an appropriately agreeable score by Max Steiner to emphasize the soap suds and the usual dramatics, but this somehow misses the mark as what should have been a superior vehicle of its kind despite having all the trimmings.

STEVE FORREST, as Wyman's "so big" son, has moments when his resemblance to real-life brother Dana Andrews is remarkable. Unfortunately, his role is poorly written without giving him the chance to show much acting range.

worth watching for the outstanding acting of Magnani

I recommend this film solely to witness Magnani's performance, which was an utterly beautiful piece of acting, indeed. Although I did not feel pulled into the plot very much, I did sympathize with Magnani's character because she played her part with such heart. I must admit that I was disappointed by Lancaster's overacting, and the minor actors also were not at all impressive. Also, I do not feel inspired to read the play itself because I don't think that reading it could compare to watching Magnani's riveting performance through which Magnani's soul itself seems to bleed.

Although I cannot think of another film with such an engaging actress, the beginning tone and ambiance of this film reminded me of other Tennessee Williams works. The atmosphere is open, naked, and almost frightening; Williams's plays always introduce characters that are very human--weak, lonely, unsettled--and deeply passionate. He doesn't take care to hide the frightening and desperate side of people even though we may not want to see that. He makes no exception in this piece, and this sense of humanity is most effectively portrayed through Magnani.

Romantic Bliss

By now, I have almost turned stoic under the stream of excellent films, but this was a magical one! At once a mesmerizing ode to the emotion of 'love', a subtle critique on the Japanese society of the time and a thing of gorgeous beauty in every frame, this movie is a really fulfilling one. It is rich in emotional intensity, in the typically subdued manner that fits Japan, yet reaching out and effecting you. The story is of a girl and a boy who fall in love and all that ensues around them, including pressures from family, society, demands of life, etc. and with a denouement that is heartrending, to say the least. The camera drenched in mood is amazing, and the soundtrack at places is really marvelous, beautifully supplementing the film's sombre tone. Kinoshita brings romance into perspective, putting stress on the journey and not the results, and this along with Dvoje has to be two of the most complete explorations of 'love' I have seen. At minor phases, the movie might be a little stagnant or melodramatic but otherwise, its entire body sparkles with technical brilliance and innocent poignancy. Contrasted with the social behaviors that other character's exhibit, Masao and Tamiko's saga assumes an aura of purity, and ironically, also of a battle. All of the movie is narrated through the memories of an old man who returns to his home land, and the effect used on the film actually gives us a feeling that we are taking a trip down somebody's inner mind; and this is just another example of the well done technical aspects that come together to serve up a stirring, deep and 'cinematographic-ally' magnificent tale of transcendental romance. The last few moments and lines are lovely to experience, sure to touch everybody at some place.

Tries for "exotic," winds up with "routine"

In the early 1950s, Hollywood tried to compete with television's small, b&w screens by offering a number of Technicolored adventure movies filled with glamorous stars and exotic backgrounds. It was a Golden Age for movies about pirates, the French Foreign Legion, Arabian nights, jungle safaris, lost cities of gold, etc. "The Diamond Queen" fits neatly into this category but it's a minor effort and, not surprisingly, has largely been forgotten.

A bigger budget would have helped. The movie begins in the France of Louis XIV but all we see there is one mundane set showing a jeweler's workshop. The transition to India is largely conveyed by a stock-shot of a sailing ship at sea. Aside from a few more stock-shots of monkeys and other wildlife, India consists of nothing more than a few sets which seem to be left-overs from other movies.

As for the cast, neither Fernando Lamas nor Gilbert Roland seem to have a drop of French blood in them, and trying to pass Arlene Dahl off as the "Queen of Nepal" is downright laughable. However, a much bigger problem is the script. It lacks the snappy dialog which can enliven this sort of thing and its plotting seems tired and perfunctory. One never gets a sense that its two heroes might be in serious danger. When they're thrown into the Mogul's dungeon, for example, the tortures to which they're subjected seem no worse than a frat-house hazing, though the sight of a sweaty Lamas stripped to the waist and in bondage is one of the movie's few highlights. Also, the romance between Lamas and Dahl never strikes any sparks, which makes the closing scene of the ship returning to France with its starry-eyed lovers seem both flat and implausible.

At a brisk 80 minutes, however, the movie never sinks to boredom, though it never comes close to enthralling, either.

Stanwyck vs. Reagan!

Barbara Stanwyck and Ronald Reagan star together in this tale of the growing state of Montana, becoming a landowner, fighting for land, and making one's dreams into reality. It all sounds rather profound, important, or dramatic, doesn't it? Well, I probably make it sound more so than it really is. This is basically Indians vs. White Man, The Law vs. White Man Selling Ammunition to Indians, Indian Brother vs. Indian Brother, and Stanwyck vs. Reagan. The later sounds more interesting, doesn't it? Well, the viewer is led to believe that Reagan is hired as a gunslinger to get rid of Barbara when she won't leave "her" land, after White Man got Indians to raid her family settlement, which killed her father. They don't know Stanwyck. That only made her more determined to stay, and mad. Watch out! The presence of Stanwyck and Reagan elevates this otherwise generic film, which emphasizes the Indians too much in the first half. It does get better in its last 30 to 40 minutes with Stanwyck declaring war. But, there's too much of everyone's against everyone else and trying to keep up with who's on whose side and who's betraying whom, and the actors portraying the Indians slow down the film with their, to be frank, pretty lame acting. By the end of the film, you'll probably like it on the whole, due to the chemistry and flirting between Barbara and Ronnie and their being on the screen more together near the end of the film. But, you'll also wish they were in other better films than this.
