Great stuff

Another strong postwar melodrama of hard, hard times in Japan. This one, however, has the heartbreak undercut with a certain hopefulness and humor. A little uneven at times, and the character who starts out as the storyteller falls into the background. Still, if you get a chance to see this(it's not on video or DVD) jump at it. Nine out of ten.

Review :

Decent B-Action Feature

This is a decent if imperfect B-grade action feature, which today offers the added attraction of seeing the contemporary road-racing cars. The story uses a familiar plot idea, and simply adds the racing setting to give it some extra turns. The cast and characters are solid, though none of them really stands out.

John Ireland plays a wrongly-accused fugitive who kidnaps a female racer played by Dorothy Malone, and then heads for the border in her car. Roger Corman's story has some good sequences of action and drama, but there are a number of other stretches where things become dull or repetitive. The climactic race sequence offers an adequate finale, though it leaves you with the feeling of slightly unrealized potential.

The movie has enough strengths to be at least average for its time and genre. If you can overlook a few flaws, it's worth seeing as a way to pass an hour or so.

Tanguy 50 years ago..

Etienne Chatiliez's idea -a big boy nearing thirty still living with his folks - for his "Tanguy" was not that much new,by a long shot.Jean -Paul Le Chanois's hero did the same in 1954;take law instead of Chinese and you've got a "new" screenplay.

THat said,"Papa ,Maman,la bonne et moi" is a rather clumsy comedy ,Gaby Morlay playing -as an amateur- Marguerite Gautier at fifty-something does not exactly equal Garbo.It' s not very funny all in all,and there are not many surprises for the audience.

Le Chanois,one of the betes noires of la nouvelle vague,was a former critic in "les cahiers du cinema" though,this magazine in which Truffaut and co cut their teeth in the fifties.

This is now some kind of document of a time when petits bourgeois like Lamoureux's family used to live in the same apartment building than the proles.(with one significant difference:the rich used to live on the lower stories ,the less-than-wealthy in the rooms with slopping ceilings up where they belong ,so to speak.)

threadbare farce

This film was clearly made with cinemas in the north of England in mind.You can tell that by the regional accents and supposed location of this film.The film has a threadbare appearance in every sense.It looks as if it were filmed in a broom cupboard by a third rate theatrical trope.Even Diana Dors is dragged down.Notice how when she is in her home she talks with a broad Lancashire accent but when she is outside say the dance hall she talks without an accent.The basic problem though is that this film is completely unfunny.What is most surprising is that the BFI should consider this film worthy of a DVD release.I cant see anything of interest in this tepid load of tripe.

Comanche Justice

A whole group of competent B film players get cast in The Nebraskan which as a film might pass muster for an episode on a television western. It's one of the most contrived pieces of film making I've ever seen.

First we have some Comanche politics where Maurice Jara is accused of murdering the old chief in a palace coup d'etat. His accuser is Jay Silverheels who becomes the new chief. Things are really bad though when Jara decides white man's justice is better so his friend, army scout Philip Carey brings him in.

But when they lock him in the army guard house, another prisoner there, Lee Van Cleef has other ideas. He's a trooper accused of murder and he busts out together with Jara.

Then we got passengers on a stage Richard Webb and Robert Haynes, husband and wife, who get rescued by the cavalry and then rescued by Carey on the trail of Van Cleef and Jara. Wouldn't you know it she's Carey's old flame who married Webb on the rebound.

All these good folks wind up at Wallace Ford's old besieged by Silverheels and the Comanches who want Jara real bad. If you have no idea how this is all going to end, you've not seen too many westerns.

Regis Toomey as the post commanding colonel and Dennis Weaver as a hot headed young captain complete the cast of this western. It's way too contrived for my taste and the ending in how all is put right makes no sense at all.

But if you're interested in what I'm talking about sit through The Nebraskan and find out.

Gordon Scott Swings into Action

In the African jungles at RKO studios, white men hunt wild animals who mind their own business in stock footage. This upsets jungle king Gordon Scott (as Tarzan) and area natives. They wear animal skins, bones and feathers. There is no "Jane", so Mr. Scott meets pretty nurse Vera Miles (as Jill Hardy) taking a swim. They are mutually attracted. Later, Scott rescues Ms. Miles from quicksand and washes a leg, arm and neck before observing censorship rules. Several lions run toward the camera. Sporting a 1950s hair style, this was Scott's first outing as "Tarzan". Holding in his stomach even when he doesn't need to, Scott handsomely shows off a beautiful physique. Miles is exceptionally attractive. They got married.

Reasonably enjoyable western with solid plot

In the small western town of Nome, "spoiling" is rife – that is the practice of driving others off their land and jumping onto others' claims as if they were your own. Without law and order Dextry and his partner Roy Glennister risk losing their mine to a group of characters out to jump their claim. The law is controlled by Alexander McNamara who stands to greatly benefit from getting control of the mines. As if the tension between Glennister and McNamara isn't tight enough as a result of this, McNamara also has eyes for Glennister's longtime girlfriend, hostess Cherry Malotte.

Having seen several westerns from the 1950's recently, I came to this with the impression that it would be just yet another forgettable genre film and, in a way, I suppose it was. However this is not to say that it is an average film because it is actually a pretty enjoyable genre picture. The plot mixes gun fights with crime with semi-love triangles and an air of comedy. It doesn't all sit well together but it does enough to provide an entertaining 90 minutes in the way that films of this nature used to try and do for their audiences. I personally didn't buy the love conflict aspect of it and would have liked that toned down a little bit in favour of more of the claim-jumping aspect but it all did enough to distract me on a quiet evening in.

The cast are solid enough but none of them particularly stuck in my mind. Baxter is colourful and does bring life to the film but the two male leads didn't impress me at all. Calhoun is just a mould of a leading man – nice smile, big chest, big jaw but nothing specific or special about him. Meanwhile Chandler just seems too old and grey for the character he is asked to play and I kept feeling like I was losing sight of him among the extras. Support from McIntire, Danton and others is OK but mostly the cast are just doing what the genre requires and no more.

Overall this is an enjoyable genre picture and it will provide entertainment for fans. The casual viewer will note the weaknesses that are inherent in this type of film but to be fair to it, it only does what you expect and for me it did it well enough to be a distracting piece of fun when I was in the mood for a solid bawdry western and nothing more.
